The Super Late Models returned to Toledo Speedway for the 2nd time this season for a Gold Cup 75 lap event. Scott "Hurricane" Hantz, in his familiar white and orange EMF sponsored No. 72 machine, was able to repeat his earlier Gold Cup win to make him two for two this season at the lightning quick high banked half mile. Scott, who hails from Pleasant Lake, Indiana, once again showed the Toledo Speedway fans why he is considered to be one of the finest short track drivers in the country. The fans also enjoyed a fresh voice at the microphone this night, as friend Charlie Krall did an admirable job filling in for regular announcer Gary Lindahl.
Scott nearly set a new track record for an outlaw bodied Super Late Model in qualifying, barely missing the mark set by Junior Hanley eight years ago by just two hundredths of a second. The inversion for the 19-car field was nine, putting Australian native Andrew Hagen on the pole in his black No. 00 Brad Keselowski owned Ford.
At the start, Hagen jumped out to an early lead closely followed by Ron Allen in the beautiful Giles Auto Body yellow and black No. 88. Hantz wasted no time storming through the field by moving up to 6th after only five laps, and then passing last year's champion Harold Fair Jr. for 4th on lap 12. Hantz took 3rd four laps later and was starting to eat into the big lead that Hagen and Allen had established when the 1st caution flag flew on lap 24. Steve Peters blew an engine and spun in his own oil making heavy contact with the Turn 1 wall causing a lengthy red flag to clean up the oil. Other than a synchronized dual spin with no contact on Lap 29, the race went green for the last 46 laps.
Just before halfway, Hantz was finally able to get around Ron Allen for 2nd, and spent the next 25 laps glued to the rear bumper of a strong running Hagen looking for an opening. Scott showed remarkable patience as he made multiple attempts to get around Andrew, but was denied time and time again. Finally, with just 11 laps to go, Hagen went to the outside to lap Paul Pelletier, giving Scott the opening he needed, and after a tight side by side battle he was able to get by and lead the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Andrew finished an outstanding 2nd followed by fan favorite Allen in 3rd.
As he crossed the line, an excited Scott exclaimed to his crew " Woo! Hoo! , that's the way we like it!" When asked about finally making the winning pass with just 11 laps to go, Scott said "I knew it was time to go!" Regarding the near miss on the track record and if it could be broken at the prestigious year end Glass City 200, Hantz then added " I just want to win the race."
In his quest
to learn American oval racing, Andrew Hagen moved from his home in Brisbane, Australia to White Lake, Mich. to drive under the tutelage of Ron Keselowski. The 22 yr. old Hagen was inspired by the exploits of fellow Australian Marcus Ambrose and decided to use his savings in an attempt to make his dream happen. Andrew said,"Ron has given me so many tidbits about this kind of racing. I just try to listen and learn from him." Apparently Hagen must be a fast learner as he was quite impressive in only his fourth start on an oval and drove an outstanding race.
The Factory Stock 20 lap A main was next on the card and was the typical hard fought affair on the tight inner track as Eric Huston was able to get by Tim Shine and cruise to the win. The race went by very quickly as it went green for the entire distance. Don Cox finished ahead of a hard charging Landon Schuster to take the second spot.
Last on the schedule was the 20 lap 4 cylinder feature. Brad Turner was once again able to use the outside groove to perfection as he won by just a fender. The father and son duo of Perry and Mike Marlow led the first 19 laps with Turner riding up high waiting to try his outside move. After running side by side with Perry for the last few laps, Brad pulled even coming out of 4 and was able to pull ahead at the last second.
