Tempers Flare for Sportsman Drivers

Toledo Speedway saw their regular divisions return, as the Sportsman, Figure Eights, Factory Stocks and Four Cylinders were all in competition Friday night after a week off. Victorious  again this year were Terry Jones (Sportsman), Robbie Loving ( Figure 8), Landon Schuster (Factory Stock A), Randy Padgett Jr. (Factory Stock B), and Brad Turner (4 Cylinder).

Although most of us exhausted all our fireworks last weekend, the Sportsman division decided to save some leftovers for their 1st Heat as the top three all made heavy contact both with each other and the wall on Lap 5. Jim Froling was attempting an outside pass on leader Tom O'Leary IV when Howard Kelley Jr. dove to the bottom making it three wide as they entered Turn 1. Kelley made contact with O'Leary causing both to spin and slam into the wall as Froling was swept up into the incident as well.

Howard and his nhoward_kelley_surveys_damage-rtephew Tommy had differing views as they both blamed each other for causing the contact. The younger O'Leary was pitted right next to his Uncle Howard as both drivers glared at each other while their crews hurried to tear off all the crumpled metal. At the other end of the pit area, Froling's Wolverine Motorsports crew worked tirelessly to replace the entire right front corner of the No. 46 finishing just in time for the feature.

All three of them were able to roll off at the last minute as the Sportsman cars took to the big half mile for their 35 lap feature. The field was placed in a full inversion which made all the drivers just a little cautious at the start. David Frantz took the lead at the start, but was soon passed by Terry Jones followed by Ron Allen and Kelley. Jones and Allen along with 4th place Art Rozanne had managed to avoid the heat race mayhem earlier in the night and had to figure it was finally their turn for some good luck. On the other hand, Kelley's night only got worse, as he was hit in the rear by Rozanne going into Turn 1 causing heavy damage to the rear of his car after hitting the wall.

Froling made a daring Turn 3 pass in the grass to take 3rd place and with 15 laps to go the top three ran nose to tail the rest of the race. Ron Allen tried repeatedly to pass Jones both high and low, but Terry was able to keep throwing the block and remain in front, while Jim sat patiently in 3rd waiting to see what Ron's next plan of attack was going to be. Try as hard as he could, Allen was not able to get by Jones, and as they took the checker right in Terry's tire tracks, Froling made his move to pull alongside Ron and take second in a photo finish.

Jones took his 3rd win of the year and said in victory lane "I'd like to thank the fans for coming out tonight in this heat. I thought Ron Allen was going to get me there a few times. He's a good racer."

After all the troubles earlier, Jim Froling was very pleased with 2nd. "Excellent job by our Wolverine Motorsports team" and joked "Maybe I should adjust my set up to have a 3" toe out all the time! "

Next up was the crowd pleasing Figure 8 machines. Robbie Loving in No. 16 won his 2nd feature of the year, although just when it looked like he had the win in hand he collided with a lapped car at the intersection and fortunately for him had a big enough lead to make it to the checker followed by the "Rebel" Dennis Whisman.

The Factory Stocks had their normal slam bang action on the tight inner track as Landon Schuster was able to win his 2nd A Main feature of the year by passing early leader Don Cox on Lap 10 and led the rest of the way. The Factory Stock B Main feature was won by Randy Padgett.

The final event of the night was the 20 lap 4 cylinder feature. The race went caution free as early leaders Perry Marlow and Mike Marlow went door to door for the top spot in a bit of family rivalry. Last year's champion, Brad Turner, charged to the outside to make it 3 wide for a couple of thrilling laps before pulling ahead and cruising the rest of the way to the win. In victory lane, Brad said, "At the start of the race, I was patient and let it come to me. Thanks to all the fans."
