The fireworks are coming early this year on the 3rd of July as the cars and stars of the USAC National Sprint Car Series and Midget Series are returning to Toledo Speedway for a rare double header. Race fans will have a special treat as they get to see the non wing Sprints and Midgets appearing together on the same night with two features for the price of one.
The United States Auto Club (USAC) is returning to Toledo after a one year absence for the Hemelgarn Racing/Super Fitness event on the Friday night of the holiday weekend. Toledo area native Ron Hemelgarn, the 1996 Indy 500 winning car owner with driver Buddy Lazier, is sponsoring the event once again this year. This has been one of my favorite shows at Toledo for the last several years, and I am really pleased to see it back on the schedule this year. These cars really put on a spectacular show on the ultra fast high banked half mile at Toledo Speedway. The track has made several improvements this year for their 50th season including installation of a new lighting system that has greatly improved visibility.
The USAC series has been a breeding ground for future talent in the NASCAR series and drivers Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards and Ken Schrader all cut their teeth with USAC before moving on to the stock cars. Many of the top NASCAR teams continue to look to USAC for future talent and development drivers, so there is a good chance you may see a star of the future. Current point leaders Dave Darland in Sprints and Brad Kuhn in Midgets will be looking to increase their point margins while challengers Levi Jones (Sprints) and Jerry Coons Jr. (Midgets) are hoping to move closer to the top spot with a good finish.
Some of the former winners of this event are Dave Darland, Michigan's own Brian Tyler, Bobby East, 2009 Little 500 winner Dave Steele, Josh Wise, Kevin Swindell, and Bobby Santos III. In prior years, some of the greats of the past have been in attendance, like 1973 USAC champion Rollie Beale, Little 500 Hall of Fame inductee Karl Busson, Benny Rapp, and others. In addition to the on the track action, there will be a group of historic open wheel cars on display much to the delight of racing historians like myself.
