It was another wild slugfest at Toledo Speedway on Sunday as the ARCA ReMax series made their first of two stops at the high banked half mile for the Menards 200. Rookie Parker Kligerman garnered his first ever ARCA win in his black Cunningham Motorsports No. 77 Dodge holding off Justin Lofton by just a couple car lengths on a green white checker finish. Kligerman, an 18 yr. old Penske development driver ,who will soon be graduating high school in a few weeks in his home town of Westport, Ct., currently sits 2nd in points to Lofton. Whoever said patience is a virtue must have been thinking of this race, as the pits were full of crumpled metal with frustrated drivers and frayed tempers after the checkered flag finally ended the day.
The fans flooded the front stretch for the pre-race autograph session as the drivers took their places and the cars were all placed in their starting positions. Many time Toledo ARCA competitor Ken Schrader was joined by NASCAR driver Paul Menard and the lines were long as many waited patiently for a chance to meet them. Roush driver David Ragan was not racing but was also on hand for autographs. Young local driver Chad Finley of Lansing was making his ARCA debut in the black No. 29 Chevrolet entered by Brad Keselowski Racing as well as Flat Rock regular Jeffrey MacZink in his No. 45. Perennial ARCA champion Frank Kimmel in his Menard's Ford and former NASCAR Talladega winner James Hylton, at the age of 74, were two of the other notable drivers in the field.
Qualifying was rained out and set by points, so Schrader and Menard both started deep in the field while Justin Lofton took the early lead from his front row spot. The first major incident of the day occurred on lap 33 when Kimmel and Bryan Silas made contact, causing heavy damage to the Silas car, but both were able to continue. Schrader had moved up to 3rd and Menard to 10th by lap 43 when disaster struck for Patrick Sheltra in 9th place. Sheltra was hit in the rear by Menard in Turn 1 causing him to slam the wall sustaining heavy damage to the rear. Schrader inherits the lead, followed by Kimmel, when the rest of the leaders pit on lap 75 and those two continue to lead the field until the halfway point when they both hit pit road. Lofton once again resumes the lead followed by Kligerman, Matt Merrell, and Menard. After extensive repairs, Sheltra rejoins the field on lap 112 in a heavily damaged car in an attempt to gain as many points as possible.
Lofton pits on lap 118 giving up the lead to Parker Kligerman who is followed closely by Menard, Merrell, and Chad Finley who put in a great drive from his 27th starting spot. Schrader quickly moves back up through the field to 3rd place trailing Kligerman and Menard when Finley gets spun on lap 171 while running 4th. As the laps wind down, Schrader passes Menard and looks ready to challenge Kligerman when he cuts a tire and slams the wall entering turn 1 with just one lap to go. Unfortunately for Kligerman's nerves, the Schrader incident triggers a green, white, checker shootout with Lofton right on his bumper, but Parker was able to hold him off by a couple lengths to take the win.
Kligerman takes the checker, but the fireworks were not yet over in Turn 4. Sheltra slowed on the last lap waiting to ambush Menard and spins Paul down in the grass as payback for the earlier incident. Simultaneously, Kimmel also spins and Craig Goess hits the turn 4 wall very hard while getting airborne while the rest of the field scatters. Menard ends up sliding across the finish line backwards still finishing 4th! Final finishing order was Kligerman, Lofton, Hessert, Menard, Merrell, and Finley. Parker gave his team credit and attributed his win to handling the restarts. "If you watched last night in the All Star race, Kyle Busch, one of the best re-starters probably in this business. We just mimicked what he did, you know, we just played the game. You make everyone else play your game, you don't play their game when you're the leader."
