Paul Hahn leads flag to flag in the K-100 ARCA Lincoln Welders Trucks at Toledo Speedway on Saturday. Hahn, of Canton, Mich., wins the tough 100 lap event in his silver No. 7 Chevrolet and picks up right where he left off as the defending champion. Qualifying was rained out due to inclement weather, so the starting field was set by last year's points putting Paul Hahn on the pole next to Nick Gullatta in the yellow No. 31. The skies were bright and sunny in time for the start allowing Hahn to set sail from the green, and he was never seriously challenged for the entire distance.
The race was anything but boring, however, as several drivers made stirring charges through the field and looked for a while like they might have a strong challenge for the leader. Veteran driver Steve Christman, who finished third in the 1987 NASCAR Rookie of the Year points behind Davey Allison and Dale Jarrett, started 14th and managed to get up to 3rd place by lap 30 before engine trouble put him out of the race.
Tommy Adams, son of former long time track owner, Sonny Adams, also was moving up through the field before having a hard wreck in Turn 4 on lap 32. Nick Gullatta provided the most excitement as he came up through the field from the rear three separate times and looked like he was ready to make a bid for the lead. Gullatta drove up as high as second with only 10 laps to go, but he ran out of fuel on the last lap and coasted across the line in 10th. Hahn was trailed at the finish by second place Tully Esterline with Mike Young in third.
"The truck was great, especially on the long runs," said Hahn. "We were able to keep everything behind us, take care of our equipment and bring it home. Great way to start off the year."
Notching his 23rd victory in the series, Hahn is just one behind the all time win record of Chad Guinn.
"Chad was a great champion and a great competitor in this series," added Hahn. "To be on his level is an honor for me. If things go well this year, maybe we can win a handful more races and set that record."
