Warm temperatures and sunny skies greeted race fans as Toledo Speedway opened on Saturday afternoon with the ASA LMS North Div. for a 125 lap event. This series has built a reputation as a springboard for new upcoming talent, and this year is no exception. Race fans were greeted with a couple familiar names, if not faces, including a 15 yr. old Ross Kenseth, son of Matt, and Brent Brevak, son of former ARCA champion, Bob Brevak. Ross Kenseth was very complimentary of the track, said it was really fast, and reminded him a lot of
Landon Cassill, last year's Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year, was fast qualifier in his Port City No. 161, and started sixth after the invert alongside 2008 champion Eddie Hoffman. Pole sitter Dave Gentile Jr. took off to an early lead at the start until passed by Griffin McGrath, as Cassill moved up through the field. When leader McGrath spun in turn 3, Cassill took the lead with Ross Kenseth right in his tire tracks as those two drivers tried to set sail on the rest of the field.
After a mul
ticar crash on the backstretch, Eddie Hoffman pits for some adjustments and to get his drink bottle relocated while everyone else decided to stay out. Hoffman had to work his way back from the rear of the field giving the fans a lot of thrills as he surged back up towards the front. Cassill and Kenseth still appeared to have the cars to beat until a multicar crash on lap 65 changed the entire complexion of the race. Leader Cassill checked up for a spin in front of him, and Kenseth and Gentile Jr. could not react in time, causing the top three cars to all end up in a smoking heap at the exit of turn 2.
When all the cars were removed from the track, Trent Snyder inherited the lead, but Hoffman was not to be denied and ended up passing Snyder and taking the top spot. Brian Campbell made a valiant charge to move up to second, but ran out of laps and trailed Hoffman at the finish with Snyder finishing third. Hoffman's victory in his red No. 8 Lisa Thomas Salon Ford Fusion in the first North series race of the season puts him right where he left off last season in defending his championship.
