It was Déjà Vu all over again at Flat Rock Speedway Saturday night for Red Creme Soda Night on Father's Day weekend. The feature winners in the Street Stocks, Figure 8's, and 4 cylinder divisions were all able to repeat their earlier triumphs to garner their 2nd wins of the season. The hard working track staff performed an absolutely herculean job to get all the standing water from Friday's storms removed from both the racetrack and pit area in time for the evening's events.
In the 25 lap Street Stock A main, it was "time for Moore" as Tim Moore in his No. 83 Monte Carlo was able to win his 2nd feature of the year. Tim started on the pole and was able to survive a thrilling duel the last five laps with Derek Wiley in the blue and yellow No. 27. Derek made a great move on lap 20 to dive inside of Moore entering turn 1, the two combatants went side by side
trading paint for a lap, until Tim was able to pull back ahead on the outside. Their battle was not over however as the top two encountered lapped traffic on the white flag lap. Moore attempted to pass the slower No. 12 car on the outside, while the "Wiley" veteran took advantage of the opening and dove down to the bottom. The two raced side by side in a dead heat with Derek on the bottom trapped by the slower car and Tim on the outside. As they went through turns 3 & 4 on the last lap, Wiley attempted to move up around the No. 12, which caused him to make contact with Moore spinning them both. Unfortunately for Wiley, his car was damaged too badly to continue, but he showed great sportsmanship by taking the blame for the incident, thus allowing Moore to keep the top spot. Tim was able to survive the last lap shootout with Dan Ford Jr. on his bumper to win his 2nd feature so far this season. In victory lane, Tim said "Wow. That sure was a wild one, the wildest one I can remember. I'd like to thank sponsor Maaco, my family, friends, and all the fans." It was a night for repeats, as James Rae was able to take a close win in the 15 lap Street Stock B Main event by just a fender over a hard charging Rich Abel.
The next event was the 20 lap feature for the exciting 4 cylinder division. Perry Marlow on the inside and Matt Brazeau on the outside raced side by side for the first several laps, with neither one able to gain much of an advantage. The No. 27 Dodge Shadow of Shawn Bershback finally took matters in his own hands and split them by going through the middle, making it three wide, and taking the lead. Brad Turner in his Focus made a spirited charge for the win, but fell short by just a bumper at the stripe. A happy Bershback said,"My wife and children came out for the 1st time this year. Brad is always tough; he can win any given race, but I was able to hold him off."
The popular "Motor City Madmen" of the Figure 8's took to the track for their feature. The "General" Jerry Lee and Jeremy Vanderhoof were the early leaders, but ran into some misfortune when they tangled allowing Jeremy Miller in his white and red No. 52 to slip past and lead the rest of the way. The win was Miller's 2nd of the season and increased his margin as the point leader.
The last event of the night was the 12 lap Train Race with 2 cars chained together. The driver of the lead car has the engine, while the driver of the trailing car operates the brakes. Unfortunately, there were only 4 cars in the race, but three of them had an O'Leary behind the wheel. The O'Leary family, which normally races a Sportsman car at Toledo, has made a specialty of the train races with three generations with the same name of Tom O'Leary all competing in different cars. This night's event was won by the team of Howard Kelley Jr., and Tom O'Leary III followed by son Tom IV/Adam Plonski and Grandpa Tom II finishing third.
Next Saturday is the big 150 lap Stan Yee Memorial race with Joe Ruttman competing.
