Flat Rock Speedway started their 56th season after a long winter with the "7 Up Opening Night" . The pits were filled with 19 Late Models, 40 Street Stocks, and 18 Figure 8 competitors. While many of the other tracks in Michigan were forced to postpone due to the weather, the skies cooperated much to the pleasure of the fans. Opening night usually draws an enthusiastic crowd and everyone enjoyed themselves both in the stands as well as the grassy spectator hill in turns 3 & 4. Unfortunately, however, there must have been some opening night jitters, as all the feature events were marred with red flags, but the racing otherwise was spectacular.
The 50 lap Late
Model feature saw the return of the "Magic Man" Dick Barker in his orange No. 45 with a retro looking paint scheme similar to one he drove twenty years ago. Unfortunately, Dick was involved in a multicar incident on Lap 14. Dennis Strickland started on the front row and led the entire distance in the 50 lap feature, and to celebrate his first win of the season, he climbed the fence up to the flagstand to retrieve the checkers a la Tony Stewart. Eric Lee made a big charge on the outside, going three wide with both Keith Nelson and Ron Allen in the closing laps, to take second place, and Nelson held off Ron Allen for third.
The Street Stocks are always such a very competitive division and they put on a great show. The quality of some of the cars this year has to be seen to be believed, and the two black/silver team cars of Rob and Tim Moore are two of the best appearing Street Stocks I have ever seen. Look for more on these two fine drivers in a future column. After a couple of early multicar accidents in Turn 1, everyone got settled down, and the 25 lap A main feature was won by Clyde McKee with Rich Frantz right on his bumper giving him a strong challenge. Eric Fitzpatrick took the win in the 15 lap B main event over Lonnie York.
Last was the wild 20 lap feature for the "Motor City Madmen" of the Figure 8 division. There were as many Figure 8 cars this year as we have seen in a long time. With 18 cars on the challenging Figure 8 track, you know there is bound to be a lot of traffic and close misses at the intersection. Robbie Loving led the entire way until he got bottled up with lapped traffic with just 2 laps to go. Billy Earley was quick to take advantage and the win over Jeremy Miller and Dennis Whisman. Racing for all three divisions will continue next Saturday on Armed Forces Night with free admission to all Military with ID.
