Last week the staff racers and fans where saddened to hear the news that assistant flag man Kevin Buskirk had passed away at the young age of 38. Kevin had been a member of the I-96 Speedway racing family for over twelve years and had a special place in most everyone which he came in contact with at I-96.![]()
Kevin got his start at I-96 working in the line up area, a thankless behind the scenes job getting upwards of 20 cars in order so when they pull out on the track they are ready to take flight around I-96 Speedway. From the line up chute Kevin moved to the back stretch of the speedway as a secondary flag man and assisting with getting cars lined up in order under cautions. After a few years Buskirk moved up to the flag stand along side Tim Beebe.
Kevin was also responsible for bringing together the Ionia Sand Drags and I-96 Speedway as both had a special place in Kevin’s heart.
Eric Shade met Kevin after taking a interest in working at I-96 Speedway. Kevin would go on to train Shade to take over his post at the line up chute about 8 years ago as Kevin would take his new post on the back stretch before moving to his newest post at I-96 as assistant flag man.
Shade recalled back to his first night working at the speedway with Kevin lining up cars. Shade said “the heat races where fine, the cars would come eight or ten at a time. But the features where a different story, you have 20 or more rumbling grumbling race cars that need to be lined up in matter of just a few minutes. I was freaking out, but Kevin was as cool as a cucumber. Once I took on the line up role full time and Kevin moved to the back stretch Kevin would always check up on me throughout the night”. That’s just the kind of guy Kevin was, says Shade. He always had your back, and he was always there to lend a hand.
Sarah and Mike Mouch, owners of I-96 Speedway, remember Kevin as a loving family man who was always around to lend a helping hand. He loved being at I-96 Speedway and the adjacent Ionia Sand Drags, and everyone loved to be around Kevin. Every time Kevin was at the track 12 yr old son Austin was in tow.
Mike, Sarah and the I-96 Speedway staff are setting up a memorial fund for Kevin and his family as he left behind a wife Brandi, daughter Shannah, and the a fore mentioned son Austin. If you would like more information about the Buskirk Memorial fund you can contact the track at www.i96speedway.com or (616) 642-0555.
