Terry Sroufe put the wraps on the 2009 season at Butler Speedway with a victory in the Bill Pifer Memorial Race for Outlaw Late Models. Other feature winners during the season-ending Butler Spectacular were Kevan Free (modifieds), Jake Rendel (sportsman), and Jarrett Rendel (street stocks).
Pete Datson and Ron Miller made up the front row for the outlaw late model feature, with Miller moving into the early lead. Sroufe started in the second row and quickly moved into the runner-up position. Miller and Sroufe dueled until the waning laps, when Miller slowed with mechanical woes. Sroufe took over and led the rest of the way. Datson was second at the checker, followed by Bryan Koebbe, Tod Pifer, and Ernie Haynes. The late model heat race went to Pifer.
Tom Maley started on the pole for the modified feature and led until sixth-starting Free made his way to the front and went by following a lap 3 restart. Mike Tarlton started eighth and also found his way to the front, pulling alongside Free on the seventh circuit.
But Free charged back ahead, and Tarlton later made contact with the turn 4 wall. Todd Sherman started at the tail of the field and made his way to second in the late going, and tried to make an outside pass in the final turn for the win, but spun, falling to sixth in the finishing order. Free took the win over Tarlton, Mark Fowler, Bob Coats, and Todd Ogden.
Preliminaries for the modifieds were held on Saturday, with heat wins going to Tarlton and Shane Unger. The pursuit was won by Tom Maley.
The Rendel family visited victory lane numerous times during the weekend. In the sportsman division, Jake Rendel won the feature, his heat race, and the pursuit. He was also second in a modified heat race and had a top-10 feature finish in that class. Jarrett Rendel won his heat race in the street stocks, along with the feature. Jake also was in a modified and landed a top-10 feature finish. The #006 family street stock would also go to victory lane in the mechanics race with Tony Britton at the wheel.
Steve Langdon led the sportsman division feature at the start, but went to the pits in the early going, giving the lead to Jake Rendel. Langdon would return and restart at the tail, eventually moving his way back to second at the checker. Following Jarrett Rendel and Langdon at the finish were Todd Silvey, heat winner Wes Bates, and Chris Sands.
Bob Rendel and Keith Hiller each led early in the street stock feature, with Jarrett Rendel coming from a seventh-place starting spot to grab the win. Bob Rendel was second, while Justin Gamber came from a sixth-row starting spot to take third. Sheryll Dishaw was fourth, with Chris Garrett fifth. Among Saturday's street stock heat winners were Andrew Ritter, Chris Garrett and Levi Collins. The pursuit race went to Jeff Beaty. A last chance race on Sunday was won by Pete Datson.
Leading the way in Sunday's powder puff race was Rachel Beeres, aboard the car of Sheryll Dishaw. Other top finishers were Amy Moore, Becky Barnett, and Cindy Grinell. In the modified mechanics race, Keith Hard drove Tom Maley's racer to the win. Angie Tarlton was second, with Terry Hard third, Charles Smith fourth, and Tyler Rankin fifth. In the street stock mechanics race, Britton won over Renald Rivera, Scott Smith, and Dan Thrasher.
Butler Speedway thanks the fans, drivers, crews, track workers, and anyone that supported the track during the 2009 season.
