Needing a fifth-place finish to be assured of his first Butler Speedway winged sprint points title, Nathan Bevard drove to fourth-place in Saturday's Season Championship feature. Chad Blonde took the feature win, his first of the season at Butler.
Other 2009 champions are Tommy Beezley (UMP Modifieds), Logan Beckwith (sportsman), and Bob Rendel (street stocks).
Bevard entered Saturday's program with a 20-point lead over nine-time track champion Ken Mackey. The duo made up the front row for the 25-lap Season Championship feature. With Mackey needing a win and some tough luck by Bevard to steal the title away, the driver of the red #25m flew into the lead at the outset. Mackey set a torrid pace, but Bevard hung close and remained in second until past the midway point when Mark Aldrich and Blonde both went past on a restart.
With five laps remaining, the top 4 were Mackey, Aldrich, Blonde, and Bevard. With three laps left, Blonde blew around Aldrich as they were exiting turn 4, and a lap later he ducked under Mackey on the backstretch for the lead. At the checker, it was Blonde, Mackey, Aldrich, Bevard, and 2008 champ Mark Broughman. The rest of the top 10 were Aaron Smith, Shelby Bilton, Troy Chehowski, Gerry Hart, and Tim Evilsizer. Sprint car heat races were won by Blonde and Aaron Smith.
Beezley is the first modified champion at the speedway since 1996, with the title that season going to Todd Sherman. Beezley took the title in style, leading every lap of the Season Championship feature. Mike Tarlton chased Beezley much of the way, but was unable to get around. The race saw two red flags and just seven cars remained at the checker.
Following Beezley and Tarlton in the finishing order were Jake Rendel, Brian Przepiora, and Terry Stratton. Sixth through 10th were Josh Lolmaugh, Kevan Free, Tim Abbeg, Ryan Cripe, and Jeff Reay. Modified heats were won by Beezley, Przepiora, and John Brooks.
Beckwith also wrapped up his sportsman division points title with a convincing victory, leading from start-to-finish. His title also came after missing part of the early season and losing valuable points. Jessi Sroufe held second until a lap 12 spin, when Jarrett Rendel moved into the spot. A hard charging Paul Smith then grabbed second, but would experience problems on the final lap, falling to sixth in the finishing order. Following Beckwith at the checker were Rendel, Mike Langdon, Glenn Heath, and Steve Langdon. The rest of the top 10 were Smith, John Rentchler, Sroufe, Ryan Martin, and Cameron Hoaglin. Sportsman heats went to Smith and Sroufe.
Bob Rendel kept the street stock points championship in the family. His son Jarrett Rendel won the 2007 and 2008 titles in the class, with last year's crown coming in the same car. It is Bob Rendel's first points title. Rendel led the Season Championship feature until 11th-starting Bob Dooley made his way to the front. Keith Hiller also made a charge from the seventh row and moved into second with three laps left. He challenged Dooley at the checker, but was relegated to a second-place finish. Todd Smith was third, with Rendel's fourth-place finish more than enough to give him the season-long points crown. The rest of the top 10 were Jeremy Lutz, Todd Thoms, Bruce Stephens, Kevin Butters, James Brooks, and Dirk LaPratt. Street stock heat races were won by Dooley, Rendel, Thoms, and Bruce Stephens.
