The temperature and the racing action was hot at the Galesburg Speedway Saturday night. The combination of two weeks off followed by a Saturday of beautiful weather, brought out a huge crowd for the nights action. An autograph session would lead things off. Drivers signed autographs for almost a half hour before the show was up and rolling. Then the Street Stocks would get the chance to run their 50 lap spectacular.
The Street Stock division would kick off the nights racing action. John Foote Jr., trying to rebound from motor problems his last time out, got off to a good start. Foote not only set fast time for the night, but made his way to the front of the dash, on his way to his fourth dash win of the season. Foote was not done there, as he would also make his way through the field in the feature. Foote went on to lap all but second place finisher Chris Garrett as he dominated the Street Stock division's biggest race of the season.
" It was fun to run with Chris (Garrett) again. The car handled awesome ... the track is really coming in ", said Foote Jr. He went on to say, " I just got to thank all the people who have stepped up this season to help get us here; Jim Gollaway, Bob Metheny, my dad, and crew (Kevin, Rodney, R.J). Our plan is to win the points race ... that's our goal ".
John Foote Jr. also wanted to thank his sponsors for all their support RJR Construction, Maple Hill Sprinkling, Bee Clean, S&T Lawn Services and The Bone Appetit Bakery.
The heat races had two first time winners in the '09 season, Ivan Harrison won the first heat race, while Scott Gary Jr. took his reversed colored Bat Mobile No. 71 to the winner's circle in his first appearance at the Burg this season.
The Late Models put on some great racing action throughout the night. Scott Rugg took home his third dash win of the season, and fifth overall victory.
Josh Trammell did double duty this week, as he hopped into the No. 88 Late Model, and brought home a dominating victory in the divisions lone heat race.
The feature was all skull and crossbones as Marty C. Crawford put on a racing clinic. Crawfords ride was nearly unchallenged for the lead throughout the race as he drove away to his second feature win of the season. Ed Santora Jr., fresh off his feature win at New Paris the previous week finished second, holding off fast time Luke Krick. Scott Rugg finished just ahead of Jesse VanAvery for the fourth place finish.
" The car was really good tonight ... we made changes after the heat race, and they were real good. We wiggled on the start just a bit, but the car was on a rail ", said Crawford. " We are just gearing up for the Freedom 100 ".
Crawford expressed thanks to his sponsors Leonard Cousino Auto Parts Company, Sweet Manufacturing and Left Hander Chassis for their support.
The Sportsman division saw a new face in the winner's circle, as rookie driver Chris Garrett got his first Sportsman win, holding off Matt Frazier in the dash. Frazier however, would not be denied in the feature as he continued to roll on his points lead. Frazier held off former point champion Tom McGhee to get his third feature win of the season (sixth win overall). Rick McMullen held off defending points champion Jim Woodin for third.
" I had a vibration at the begining of the feature, but then the car came in. I just had to be patient, watch McGhee ... he was pushing ", said Frazier. " I waited til he slipped up the track and made my move ".
When asked about the points race, Frazier said, " We're pretty comfortable ... we are sitting good right now ". Frazier thanked his wife ( Kelli ), Kids ( Mathew, Madison ) and crew for their help throughout the season. Matt also thanked B&D Chassis Engineering.
The Burg Stock division had points leader Johnny Hyder making his way to the winner's circle in the first heat race, bringing his heat win total to four. Aaron Rheinsberg would take the show from there, as he went on to win heat two for his first win of the season. Rheinsberg wasn't done there, as he would also go on to win his first feature of the season.
Due to a time curfew in the township the Sportsman heats, Mini-Stock heats, and Mini-Stock feature were not able to be completed.
Mini-Stock dash winner was Jeremy Collins, who also set fast time for the Minis.
This weeks July 4th racing event will be an action packed 8th Annual Eve of Destruction. Fireworks, Monster Trucks, The Great Lakes Mini Cup Series, and much more.
Upcoming events include the July 11th, 7th Annual Freedom 100, for the Late Models, with the regular running of the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini-Stocks, and Burg Stocks.
July 18th is Mid-Season Championship Night. Come see some of the best racing Michigan offers as the points battle is in full swing and the drivers feel the crunch of the half-way point to the Points Championship.
The racing action is really heating up, so don't miss out on the action at the Galesburg Speedway every Saturday night.
