With another great night of racing in the books, Galesburg Speedway drivers put on a great display of driving to round out the end of week 5 ( including opening nights rain out). Cold beverages were in high demand, as the hot driving heated up the raceway. Fans packed the stands as mother nature finally got on the same page with the rest of us.
The Late Models rolled out thhe dash, with 2008 Track Champion, Scott Rugg (No.49) winning the dash over hard charging rookie Adam VanAvery (No.2).
The heat race had Ed Santora (No.5) winning over Jake Hopwood (No.81) in his first trip to the track in 2009.
In the feature, Marty C. Crawford (No.X) held off the entire field from the drop of the green. Crawford received a little fight from Rugg early on in the race, but Rugg eventually would fall behind and settle for second. " The car was tight in the center, but was real good out of the corner ", said Crawford. Not running for points, Crawford explained he was gearing up for the Klash. " We have another car that is just about done, that we hope to have out in a few weeks ", added Crawford. Chuck Greer (No.84) held off Adam VanAvery for his best finish of the young season. " Rocket Man " Jeff Vochaska (No.45) would round out the top five.
In the Sportsman division, rookie contender Chris Garrett (No.31) would set the time to beat in his first fast time qualifier of the season. The dash had fifth quick, and points leader, Matt Frazier (No.97) held off teammate Adam Drobny (No.98), for his second dash win of the season.
The lone heat race of the Sportsman division went to David Elliot (No.71), who somehow held off the off the rest of the field. Scot Newsom (No.21) would follow in second place.
The feature offered little challenge to points leader Matt Frazier as he made his way to the front before the rest of the fast qualifying bunch. Frazier went on to win his second feature of the season, and gaining a stronger grip on his points lead. " I checked off not trying to gas it...there's no reason to burn up my stuff. We had to conserve, there is a long season yet, and we want to be close in the end ", said Frazier. " There's room for improvement...there is much more ", he added.
Current third place points runner, Josh Trammell (No.82), would hold off Sportsman rookie, Chris Garrett for the second place battle. Rick McMullen (No.9) got past Rick Roach (No.74) for the fourth place finish.
The Mini-Stock division had Wayne Kline (No.75) winning his first of the season, in his first dash appearance of the season. Vastly improving Garry Janow II (No.50) finished second.
The heat race also had a first time winner, as Joe Gonzales (No.29) got his first win of the season. Gonzales held off a hard charging Ken Taylor (No.27), to get the win.
The feature showed some great sportsmanship between two friends. Points leader Rick Gale (No.0) was caught up in an early race mishap, and his car was unable to continue. Rick however, was able to continue as fellow driver and friend George Watts (No.2x), climbed from his car and erged Gale to get in, to salvage his point lead. Rick did get in to the car and managed to finish in the top ten. " George and I are friends...He told me I could use his car when I wanted to...I didn't think it would be tonight ", said Gale. " You have to appreciate friends like that ", added Gale.
Jeremy Collins (No.5) would go on to win his second feature of the season, holding off a very strong preforming Wayne Kline. Rick Mann Sr. (No.51) had a strong third place finish, hoping to advance from ninth place in the points. Fast qualifier Mike Govier (No.46) would hold off Garry Janow II for fourth.
" The car was good in the feature ", said Collins, following his win. " We were pushing hard in the dash, so we changed up the stagger. I want to thank Shane Clark on the motor we have ", Collins added.
The Street Stock division put on a great show, with fast qualifier John Foote Jr. (No.11), winning his second dash of the season. Foote held off John Felter (No.43) to get the victory.
In the first heat, Bill Rabidau (No.12R) got his first ever win at the Burg. Mike Kerber (No.83) couldn't find an answer, finishing second.
Heat two went to Doug Wilhelm (No.3), as he held off the fierce driving " Billy Bob " Ron Bresett (No.66), to get the win.
The feature was all Johnny Foote Jr. Foote made his way to the front of the field within a few laps and casually went on to win. The feature win was the second of the season for Foote, who is off to a superb start to the 2009 season.
" Our car was on a rail all night, it ran great til the last five laps ", said Foote. He then added," something broke and the car wasn't the same, I babied it the rest of the way. Its still a fun place to be, a lot worse things could happen ".
Travis Loop (No.27) continued his quiet journey to the top in the points, with a second place finish. Bryon Noble (No.37) finished third with the rubber side down, just one week removed from his horrific crash on the front stretch. To insure that it didnt have the same results again, Noble added four wheels to the top of his ride. Robert Kerber (No.70) bested Ron Bresett for the fourth place finish, rounding out the top five.
The Burg Stock division had Johnny Hyder (No.41) winning for the third straight week in a row. In the heat one race, Hyder beat out Danny Bunch (No.78) in Bunch's return to the Burg. Heat two was won by Robert Taylor (No.70), holding off a charging John Neal (No.00). The roles would reverse in the feature however, as Neal would beat out Taylor for his first Burg Stock feature win of the season. This, a week after finishing runner up in the feature.
Danny Bunch finished third, a head of Jacob Barker (No.1J), Kyle McGhan (No.81) finished strong in the top five.
Galesburg kept the show moving along all night. The 5 in 1 show had concluded its night by 10 p.m. This weeks venue has the full 5-1 show, with the Mini-Stock Spectacular. The School Bus Figure Eight just one week later on June 7th, as well as the Modified, and Burg Stocks on hand.
