Chris Shannon is a normal guy who is just enjoying life and the time he has racing. Chris drives the No. 8 car in the Sportsman division at Kalamazoo Speedway. He is racing for the points at Kalamazoo but travels to other tracks like Angola when time allows. “We’ve been running here full time picking and choosing spots for points. We had a real bad night opening night finishing twelth. Just trying to run well for points,” Chris said. His first feature win in two years came last week and he dedicated to his grandmother. While describing the race win he said, “The race is huge. We’ve been racing all year thinking about my grandma. She was really close to me. We lost her to cancer last August. The end of last year was hard but we were here because we wanted to be here even though we were really choked up about it. We’ve been racing really hard trying to get a win in her memory and this ones for her.”
Chris will be celebrating his 18th birthday in July and is currently a senior at Lawton High School. He started racing go-karts and moved to stock cars when he turned 14. “I ran three years in karts. When I first started it was at Galesburg. This is my fourth year in stock car. In 2005 I raced the end of the season at M40. In 2006 we went through the car and rebuilt it and ran for points at M40. We came out with a championship with four heat race wins and six feature wins. It is the most wins anyone has ever acquired there as far as features in the Pure Stock division. I was the youngest champion at the track so we have a bit to go on.” Chris said. When asked about his first feature win he replied, “Yeah it was a Pure Stock. When we built that car we were planning on using it for seat time and went out on the second night of racing and won it.”
Chris is staring out young and gaining a fan base with his fellow classmates. Not all of the kids think it is cool but that makes no difference to Chris. The team is made up of three people; his dad, himself, and the newest member Adam. Chris receives a lot of support from loyal sponsors; Access First Federal Credit Union, Eagle Auto Parts, Wrench and Save, Ferguson/Wagner Supply, Fastenal, R&N Sport Buggy, 2 Orange Harleys, Vineyard Cafe, S&S Storage, Car Factory, SNYDER'S Competiton Engines, Maxam Farms, S&M Powder Coating and Purity Cylinder Gases.
