The stands were packed and the fans were ready for an exciting night of racing. The evening’s line-up included free bus rides, spectator drags, the Belle Tire 200 Enduro race, powder puff, and fireworks.
A lot kids were having a blast on the free bus rides around the track as the line stayed steady right up to the start of the nights racing events.
The spectator drags were quite a site to see because of the expensive cars and drivers daring enough to race them. There were a few Mustangs all different body styles from different decades. A new corvette also decided to give the race a shot. One of the nicest cars taking on the challenge was a Nova fully decked out for the drag strip. In the end it was a Mustang against the Nova. The best driver out of three races took home $250. The winner, Evan Park, in his red Mustang wasn’t able to get off the line as fast as the Nova but said, “Surprisingly I had the right gear setup.” The Mustang seemed to stick to the track and carry momentum the entire way and took over exiting turn two. The final race ended with the Nova blowing a right rear tire and not even finishing the race. No sense in ruining such a nice car and had the track been a straight shot I think the nova would have had no problem.
The main event for the evening showcased over a hundred cars geared up and ready to race 200 laps. A few early red flags resulted leaving obstacles for the remaining drivers. The cars started out in a normal direction on the track, but on lap 75 the officials turned them around to finish off the rest of the race turning right. The No. 47 car had the lead for most of the race, but sometimes challenged by the No. 24 car. After blowing a right front tire the No. 47 car was never able to get back to the lead. The No. 24 car continued to show dominance, but two other drivers had plans of their own. The No. 53 was the only other car on the lead lap and decided to push the issue on the leader. After the two drivers spent some time trading places and paint, the No. 24 found trouble and ended up in the pits. The No. 24 would be unable to finish the race. The No. 53 seemed to have the race easily in hand but something let go in the motor and affected the car for numerous laps. The car seemed to slow down with every passing lap. The No. 33 was two laps down in the second place and was able to gain one lap back while the No. 53 was having troubles. With four laps to go the motor in the No. 53 let go and the driver was unable to finish allowing the No. 33, from one lap down, to slide into the top spot. The No. 33 had experienced transmission problems throughout the race which had made him slow on the restarts. Once he made it through the gears he was off and running and took the win.
It wouldn’t be Independence Day without a celebration to our country. The night ended with an outstanding fireworks display after the finish of the powder puff race.
Kalamazoo Speedway Management wanted to remind everyone that Friday will be the next night of racing instead of Saturday. Friday will be another Low Dough night and for addition information visit the website at www.kalamazoospeedway.com
