No amount of rain on Saturday could deter the crew at Kalamazoo from trying to get in a full show. It was a low dough show for the fans and despite the rain the fans stuck around wanted to see them race. The rain delayed the start of the races and track office’s decided to run only feature races in an attempt to get the entire 5-in-1 line up.
The Cyber Stock feature was up first and proved to be one of the best finishes ever for this group of drivers. After a few hard hitting accidents the final few laps found Nick Layman No. 5, Keith Dunham No. 10, and Dale Leonard No. 94 all fighting for position. It was a confusing sight to see as all three of the drivers were diving in and out of lapped traffic trying to gain an advantage over the others. In the end it was Nick Layman taking the checked flag for victory. In second was Keith Dunham who had a fender on Nick’s quarter panel as they crossed the line. Keith said, “It was a blast… I thought I might have him when we got to that lapped traffic but I guess I had the wrong line.” In only his second feature win Nick was excited to have the finish they did, “It was amazingly good. Keith was right on me and I had to get through it (lapped traffic) because I wasn’t going to let him get that one.”
The Pure Stock feature was also a tight race to the finish. Since the qualifying for the night was didn’t take place the drivers had to line up based on points. This put Lloyd Brooks No. 22 in the last row of cars at the start of the race. With only twenty five-laps Brooks found himself in second place behind Matt Noble No. 3 as they battle for the lead. At one point Brooks got into the rear bumper of Matt sending him into a swerving slide as they headed into turn one. After a great recover Noble was able to stick it out in the last laps to finish first with Brooks close behind. Brooks said, “It was fast, had a few bad weeks the last couple times out. Had some problems with the guy who won the race (Matt), got into him a little bit and gave him his spot back. I could have pushed the issue but chose not to.” Matt was glad to have the win and said, “Struggled today in practice and changed a few things and it was a rocket in the race. Had a little pressure from Lloyd and he got into me a little bit. I just want to thank Uni-Pro Lubricants, Double Construction, Monty’s Auto Detailing, and all my guys.”
The Sportsman feature got underway late in the evening as small showers between races kept the track crew busy. Tom Rutherford No. 47 picked up his first feature win after a big wreck and time finished the racing for the night. The result of the wreck was Buddy Head No. 15 flipped over on his roof, pinned against the turn one wall by Jim Kollath No. 41. Earlier in the night Buddy got into the back of Tim Martin No. 76 as Martin was leading the race. Once the cars were sorted back out, Martin was given his spot back while Buddy was sent to the back. Martin had troubles as he found himself with a loose car that turned him around and backed into the turn two wall. The track crews were quick to respond to all the accidents throughout the night. Thankfully all drivers were able to walk away from the wreck, some more banged and bruised than others.
