Pro-Stock Driver Christopher Rice says he has been involved in some sort of racing since age three. The seventeen year old started out on dirt bikes and made the switch to cars at the age of twelve. Rice started out driving in the four-cylinder class, running at tracks such as Cherry Speedway, Mt. Pleasant Speedway, Merritt Speedway and Whittemore Speedway. Rice says he owes all his success to his father Glenn Rice and friend Randy Day, who stepped up and helped him throughout his young career.
Helped they did, in 2004, Rice won his first ever points championship. Rice won the Four-cylinder class division at the Cherry Motor Speedway. He was still on the dirt, but on four wheels instead of two. "That was a very special moment for me ", Rice said.
While he couldn't recall any bad on the track moments for himself, he explained that his father jumped in the car one night at Whittemore Speedway and T-boned the guardrail destroying the younger Rice's car. Still the good out weighed the bad. "At Mt. Pleasant, it started to rain. With less than five to go I was leading. I slipped a little and fell back to fifth. On the last lap, I found grip on the outside and managed to go from fifth to first in that final lap ", recalls Rice, with a big smile.
Christopher Rice has a lot of energy and is a very outgoing soul. The enthusiastic young man enjoys football, racing, old cars, fishing and boating. When not going to school or playing football, he is helping his dad in the garage. "Some nights till 10:30 p.m.", Chris said. "I love going fast ", and with complete confidence Chris said, "I'd like to be the first black NASCAR driver ". Chris, looking for a fresh start in a new division, is now driving in the Pro-Stock division under his old football No.76. He is hoping for some of same kind of success he earned in the Four-cylinder division.
"I just want to thank my Dad and family, the Day Family and all my buddies in Traverse City ", said Chris.
Chris plans to run Friday nights at M40 Speedway and Kalamazoo Speedway on Saturday nights. He also plans on running Kalamazoos Super Shoe at seasons end.
When asked if there was anything he would change about racing, Chris said, "More laps, more money.” At a young age Rice has no intentions of walking away from the sport he loves. "I want to race forever ", he said. His advice for the young, new drivers," put down the PlayStation remote, or the TV remote, get out in the garage with dad and pay attention ".
Come on out to the M40 Speedway Friday nights. Watch this up and coming Pro-Stock driver as he fulfills his fresh start in his new division. Come down on the track to the pit after the racing action and meet one of the nicest drivers M40 has to offer.
