Friday night at the M40 Speedway was the place to be for every race fan who enjoys great competition. The regular program was on hand along with the Mini-Cup cars making their second appearance of the season. Bike enthusiasts from around the area were also on hand for a bike show during the intermission.
Jeff Ganus found his way back to his winning ways with his fifth Late Model feature victory of the season ( 7th win overall ). Ganus made his way to the front of the field passing Cory Pressler for the lead. Ganus never looked back, walking away from the rest of the pack, on his way to the victory. Ron Coburn, who won his third heat race of the season Friday night, finished second place. Pressler pulled out a third place finish, ahead of Rick Slusher while Roger Northrup rounded out the top five.
" Car was real good, once we got past Pressler, we opened up a big lead, and just coasted the rest of the way ", said Jeff Ganus, after the race.
" Jeff Ganus and Jason Mullins work on the car 24-7," said car owner Steve Brown. " Jeff is one of the best drivers around. "
Jeff thanked Steve Brown, Jason Mullins, Lee Stanton, and Sponsors Cheers Lounge, Armstrong International Inc., Russel Automotive Inc. and Team Spirit Trailers.
The Great Lakes Mini Cup cars were on hand as they made their second visit to the M40 Speeday. Just as he did in the first visit, Tim Phillips ran away with the show. This time around however, Phillips would gain the points lead during qualifying, stealing it away from young gun Morgan Baird. The points race would stay tight, as Baird finished second to Phillips in the feature, followed by Kim Hughes, who had a real strong run, finishing third. Jesse Thatcher held off John Dewey for the fourth place finish.
" I do alot of testing at the surrounding tracks, even if it means missing a day at work to test ," said Phillips. " This track is a fun place to race, Morgan is a real tough competitor, possibly the bet driver we have in the Cups. The last five weeks (of the season) will be very interesting."
Philips thanked sponsors Advanced Automotive, Aerodynamics, and T&T Motor sports. He also thanked M40 for their invitation to the track.
Heat race winners were Tim Phillips in heat one, and Jesse Thatcher in heat two.
In the Pro-Stocks division, The " X Factor " came into play in the feature, as Fred Reed pulled off his first feature win of the '09 season, his eighth win overall. Reed held off a real strong push from Gary Wyrick throughout the feature. Wyrick held on to second place, while Gary Chapman finished third. Mickey Cornwell finished fourth beating out Steve Smith Sr.
" I had to baby the gas to keep the tires from spinning. We've been upfront, just havent had the oppurtunity to win, " said Reed. " We made some adjustments to the car, making it faster. You hear all the time, a car can't be fast on old tires ... these tires are three weeks old, this win was a long time coming ."
Fred Reed also thanked his sponsors Advanced Property Management, and L&H Automotive. Reed also thanked Jim Snyder, and Roger Northrup.
Pro-Stock heats went to Gary Wyrick, who got his second heat win of the season, fourth win overall, while Steve Smith Sr. got his third heat win of the season.
Burney Arnett got his fourth feature win of the season (third in as many weeks ) in the Pure Stocks, holding off a hard charging Todd Taylor for many of the second half laps, before beating Taylor to the checker. Josh Highbaugh held onto third place over points leader, Tony Stewart. Jeremy Pletz had his strongest finish of the season, rounding out the top five.
" Really had a challenge on my hands tonight, pretty much had to hang to the lower groove. The hotter the tires, the looser the car ," said race winner Burney Arnett. Arnett thanked his wife Gloria, and Williamson Auto & Machine.
Josh Highbaugh got his third win in as many weeks, winning heat two, while Rick Reed got the victory in heat one. The heat win was Reed's second of the season.
