As the overcast above continued to move east, the crowd at the M40 speedway settled in for another night of great racing action. As the car count continues to grow each week, again it would outdo the count from the previous week with 55 cars on hand to do battle in each division. The fans were treated to their first autograph night of the season, and would get to go down on the track to meet with their favorite drivers, as fans and drivers were all geared up for the coming feature action.
The Late Model division heat B, had Cory Pressler (No.32x) winning out over Rick Hahn (No.22), to capture his second heat of the season, and his third victory overall in the '09 season.
Heat A also had a second time heat winner, as Ron Coburn (No.42) held off a charging Robbie Ferrier (No.4) to get the win.
In the feature, Pressler led off early, as he dominated the first half of the 50 lap race. Pressler would eventually give way to a hard charging Ferrier who seemed to have the car to beat. Ferrier went on to capture his first feature win of the season in the Late Model division ( Ferrier won the Pure Stock division feature on May 8th ), beating out runner up Doug True (No.93) by +1.039 seconds. Brandon Zachary (No.19) drove strong to finish a season best, third in the Late Models. Cory Pressler would finish a respectable fourth, holding off Ron Maynard Jr. (No.27).
" The first 25 laps, the car was good. I took te lead and the car had dropped a cylinder ", said a reluctant Ferrier. " I wasn't giving up the bottom, it was hooked up for the most part ", he added.
Ferrier informed that it was just the second week out in the car, and his first win of the year. The previous week he had run at Kalamazoo Speedway, and New Paris Speedway. " I want to thank K&M, Competition Race Fuels, Wolford Electric, and Creative Vinyl Signs ", said Ferrier.
The Pro-Stocks, once again put on a great performance. Heat B winner Rodney Smith (No.30), put on a last minute pass, to beat out the previous weeks feature winner, Gary Chapman (No.31).
Heat A also had a great battle for the top spot, as race winner Fred Reed (No.32) fought off the hard charging Bill Hartman (No.2), to collect his third heat win of the year. The win was Reed's fourth overall of the season.
Mickey Cornwell (No.7) put on a racing clinic in the feature. Cornwell, the fast qualifier of the night, made his way through the sixteen pack field of cars. Cornwell would do battle for the top spot with Rodney Smith, however, Smith would no longer be able to hold off the advances of Cornwell. Cornwell would go on to his first feature win of the season by a margin of +1.312 over John Long (No.32), who had his best feature finish of the season. Smith would hold on for third, as Nick Pressler (No.32x) held off Fred Reed for fourth.
" The car was awesome, once we had the lead, we just cruised. I just told myself, no mistakes ", said Cornwell. Cornwell had changed the set-up on the car from the previous week, as that was their Kalamazoo set-up. " The car handled way better this week. I ran high on the outside, and the car was real good there. It was a real clean race ", said Cornwell.
Cornwell went on to thank his sponsors, " Dick's Auto Parts, Wild Patch, Tom J. Mosier's Well Drilling, Al's Engine Shop, Richie Jackson Fabrication, and 99 Signs ".
In Pure Stock division, heat B would see to disqualifications before crowning a winner. Matt Sullivan (No.19) would get his frst of the season at M40 as a result, holding off Steve LaFluer (No.88).
Heat A would not be the same, as Cody Dale (No.83) won a hard fought race over fast qualifier, Cory Pressler (No.14x) who came on strong, losing by a narrow margin (+0.229).
The Pure Stock feature would show a little controversy, as early front runner Tim Thurston (No.7), trying for his season high seventh win overall, would be disqualified on lap 17 for leaking water.
" They told me I was leaking from the overflow, the temperature was not even warm at only 190. I'm just sad, the car was really good. We were using last weeks set-up. Its pretty frustrating ", said a devastated Thurston.
Burney Arnett (No.98) would eventually take over the top spot and never look back, as he rolled to his First feature win of the season, and his second win overall in as many weeks. Rick Reed (No.12) would settle for second place over Cody Dale. Nick Pressler (No.4) would beat out big brother Cory, by the narrowest of margins (0.022), for fourth.
" We worked on the outside all-night. We got off to a great start, the car handled great, it wa good all the way to the end. It was just a matter of patience ", said race winner Burney Arnett. Arnett also wanted to thank Williamson Auto and Machine for the hard work on the car.
After not running the first four weeks of the season, the Mini-Stock division was on hand for their second straight week of competition. One name can pretty much sum up the night for the Mini's, James Newman (No.95). Newman set fast time for the Mini's at an eye opening 14.882.
In the heat race, Newman made his way from the back of the pack to take the lead on lap 2 of the 10 lap race. Newman never looked back, as he dominated the heat, beating out Derick Davis (No.18) who settled for second.
The feature brought more of the same as Newman dominated from the start. Newman practically led the entire 25 lap feature as he lapped all but the runner up Davis. Matt Gross (No.7) in his first time back in the saddle, finished a strong third, holding off a very determined Eric Frazier (No.69). Howard Fissette (No.4) would round out the top five.
" They told us we were running 15 laps, I new I had to go ", said a very happy Newman. In two weeks at the track, James Newman has put on a great one man performance, winning both heat races and both features. " I figure I got one week left of racing, the car handled great, it was fast. I just wish someone would buy it ", said Newman. He went on to say," I think I got this track figured out ".
Newman explained that he would only be running his car one more week at the M40 Speedway due to carpal tunnel surgery that will be performed on both of his wrist. This will bring a disappointing end to a tremendous beginning. Newman went on to thank Barnes Auto Barn Frame Shop, and his two sons, Zachary, and Dustin.
The night was completed by a swarm of fans coming down to the center of the track to once again, meet with their favorite drivers. As the weeks go by, M40 is growing into the track that it once was. This track is truly a family track, with great atmosphere. The price is right for a fun night out.
This weeks program includes the Late Model Challenge Series, and a regular racing program for the Pro-Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Mini's.
