M-40 Chilly but Thrilling

Week two at the M40 Speedway turned out to be very exciting as the racing was door to door all night.  Due to Mother Nature’s mid-day rain and the cold night weather that was forcasted to hit the track, the fan support was half of the opening day crowd .  However, the fans in attendance soldiered through the night to see some great racing action.

The Pure Stocks division started off with the dash.  Outside pole-sitter, Tim Thurston No.7 got the jump on the green flag, to take over the lead against  Josh Highbaugh No.51.  After a hard crash into the backstretch wall for the No.57 of Cory Woods, Thurston then did battle with Rick Reed No.12, ultimately beating out Reed for the win. Highbaugh was the 3rd place finisher.

In the first heat of the night, Jeremy Pletz No.15 took the green flag, leading the shortened field halfway through the race before Todd Stamm No.31 raced his Chevy truck to the front and scored his first victory of the short season.  Pletz hung on to 2nd over Darin Rife No.34.

In the heat B, Josh Highbaugh No.51 again was unable to hold off Tim Thurston No.7.  He was however, able to hold off Rick Reed No.12 for 2nd.  After Thurston took the lead he never looked back.
In the 35 lap Pure Stock feature, Jeremy Pletz No.15 got off to an early lead.  The field fought for position running three wide at times.  The unstoppable Tim Thurston No.7, making his way through the field, fought to get to the front before Rick Reed No.12 and fast qualifier Tony Stewart No.14.  The three drivers would wage battle for many laps; Thurston however, would pull off a season high 4th victory of the season.  Reed edged out Stewart for 2nd.  Josh Highbaugh No.51 held off Cody Dale No.83 for the 4th place finish.

The Pro-Stock division had some great racing as well.  In the dash Rich Mersereau No.61V ran hard against Rodney Smith No.30. They raced side by side until Smith finally beat Mersereau of the corner to take the lead.  Once out front Smith fought off hard charging Brandon Zachary No.16 to pull out the win.  It was Smith's first win of the season.  Zachary held off challenges from John Ferrier No.0 for 2nd place.

Pro-Stock heat A was a battle to the front.  The 8 lap heat had Gary Wyrick No.36 outracing Bill Hartman No.2 to pull out his first heat win, and second victory of the season.

The B heat had Rich Mersereau jumping out to the front with Rodney Smith and once again Smith pulled ahead.  This time however, the outcome would be different, as Smith ran under his qualifying time and was disqualified after the checkered flag.  This passed the victory to Rich Mersereau who held off, now 2nd place finisher Brandon Zachary.  Freed Reed No.32 would finish in 3rd place.

The Pro-Stock feature was a competitive race.  The fifteen car field got off to an edgy start as the drivers were maneuvering for position.  Gary Chapman No.31 mid-way through the race had a couple of accidents on the track before overheating brought an end to his night.  Gary Wyrick No.36 ran up front until he could no longer hold off the challenges of Rich Mersereau No.61V and Bill Hartman No.2.  Hartman would battle hard with Mersereau, but came up short as Mersereau started to pull away from the pack.  Maersereau would go on to win his first feature of the season and second win of the night.  Hartman would go on to finish 2nd, while Wyrick held off John Ferrier No.0 for 3rd place.  John Long No.32 rounded out the top five, with honorable mention going to 6th place finisher Brandon Zachary.  Zachary had a tire issue earlier in the race.

In the Late Model division dash, Jerry Zachary No.19, the outside pole-sitter, would get out front on the green.  Zachary had to hold off pole-sitter Donny Klotz No.40 as the only challenger in the 6 lap race.  Ron Coburn No.42 finished 3rd place.

The Late Model heat race started out with a determined Cory Pressler No.32x making his way to the front, from the fourth starting position.  Pressler took a few laps getting around Roger Northrup No.29.  Northrup would hold off challenges from the rest of the field for a 2nd place finish.  Pressler pulled away from the pack for his first win of the season after two 2nd place finishes the previous week.  Jeff Ganus No.5 came from the tenth starting position to finish 3rd.

The Late Model Feature showed more of the same as Pressler made his way to the front and never looked back.  Jerry Zachary No.19 made his way to the front as well, but could never find any answer for Pressler.  Zachary had his hands full with charging Jeff Vochaska No.45 coming up through the pack from his ninth starting position.  Fast Qualifier, Jeff Ganus No.5 was unable to make it two in a row after his dominating performance from a week ago.  Ganus finished 5th, behind determined Ron Coburn No.42.
The win was Presser’s first ever Late Model feature win.  “The car handled very well, I was able to hang on.  I am very happy to get my first ever Late Model feature win ", said Pressler, as he smiled from ear to ear.

The night ended with fans going down on the track to meet their favorite drivers.

The mini-Stock division did not race as there was only one mini that showed.  So bring out those Mini-Stocks, and let’s go racing.
