Derek Davis came to the Mottville Speedway for the first time ever Saturday and became the 8th different Mini Stock feature winner in 10 nights of racing during 2009!
Davis took the lead on lap 5 of the 25 lap feature and held off a determined Justin Oberlin for the win.
With the feature win and a heat win Davis took home $230 on the night!
Oberlin settled for 2nd followed by Howard Fishette, Jr., Dave Hull, season points leader Luke Thomas, Tom Davies, Jr, John Polson and Mark Mast.
Matt Morton broke a frame part during the heat and Scott Rich blew an engine in the dash.
Thomas won the dash and other heat wins went to Mast and Oberlin.
Mast also came to Mottville for the first time ever and returned to racing after taking a year off. He pulled off in the feature when his car overheated.
Following Davis in the money were Oberlin with $175, Fishette with $125, Bennett $80 and Thomas $80.
Young Justin Stambaugh came to Mottville for the first time and won the Kart feature over Jerry Jepson.
MESSAGE FROM MERLE:
The end of May already! Unreal!
This past Memorial Day week-end was interesting to put it mildly!
Considering the state of the economy, we probably had too many races.
In fact, with the big deal at S Bend I had considered cancelling our Monday show but went ahead anyway just to see how it would go.
Compared to Baer Field we did well Monday, very well!
We had 11 cars on Monday which is our season high for Mini Stocks.
I have been around racing since I was old enough to walk. As a 6 year old I worked in concession stands. Graded and watered the track as a 10 year old.
But I do not believe in all these years around racing I have seen the strange things I have seen this year!
First of all, a guy comes to Mottville and takes home $250 and then apologizes all over the place for not going to Baer Field!
Strange!
Even more strange considering BF did not pay the promised $500 but instead paid $200.
Then, a few weeks ago, we had a guy race at Mottville and made $130 which he said was the most he had ever made racing!
So he goes to another track!
Then this past Saturday he announces he is going to a track that has $20 per car load admission.
So you can imagine my shock when he shows up at Mottville!
Said he needed the money!
He got it-$125!
But we had 10 Mini Stocks Monday and we are gradually improving. In fact some other area tracks recently had 10, 11, and 15 so I am feeling pretty good about our start so far!
Here are some figures on how much different drivers have made at Mottville in 2009 with the number of nights raced in ( ). $665(8), $880(7), $745(9), $330(3, broke one of those 3). $935 (5)!!!!$340(3), $735 (4)
Derek Davis showed up Saturday for the first time this year.
We had been told he is awesome fast and he sure is!
Mark Mast came for the first time and he also is fast but has some bugs to work out.
We did have extremely good races Saturday!
Battling for every position.
As car count grows the problems grow, of course.
We are going to be watching for over aggressive driving. Just a friendly warning to all!
Also we had two cars change drivers and we were never told until we had a complaint long after the races.
Driver changes must be reported prior to the event!
This makes a big different for the dash where the top 6 in points get in!
The dash is a reward to our drivers who support us regularly.
Over the course of a season we will pay out more than $1000 for the dash!
We know there will be dips in the road ahead but we are making progress!
Now we need to get those front wheel drive Mini Thunder Cars!
We actually started this division in 2001!
Now we are offering a top pay of $100-60-50-40-30-25 and can not get cars!
Randy Thomas is working on getting one of these cars ready and hopes to have it done by June 13.
The future success of Mottville depends on this MTC!
If we could get this MTC class started it could well lead to more pay-off for the Mini Stocks as we would then start advertising in the area newspapers and start getting bigger crowds!
But now we desperately need the Mini Thunder Cars!
We need a second class of cars and a more economical class below the Mini Stocks.
How people noticed the walls had been painted?
Mottville Lake is almost gone! Just hanging on in the infield!
The past two weeks have been most encouraging!
Two months done, 5 months to go!
I still think after all these years that you just can not beat fun at the old speedway!
