Loomis wins Street Stock special at MP Speedway

The forecast called for rain and thunderstorms all day, but in the end Mother Nature rmust have been a race fan because aside from a few brief sprinkles no rain hit the Mt. Pleasant Speedway on Friday, Aug. 7 and racing went on as scheduled.

It was a night full of specials at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway as Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive sponsored the evening's features with trophies to the top three in each main event. My wife Debbie and I also sponsored the annual Carl McCrumbe Memorial Smokers Club Street Stock $300 to win feature in memory of my late grandfather who died in 1998 and was a former racer.

With several other tracks having cancelled because of rain, Mt. Pleasant was also the beneficiary of some added cars.

The 25-lap Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified feature was up first with 20 cars taking the green flag. Double duty driver No. 0X Zack Olger took a commanding lead early with No. E-98 Joe Pomeroy, another double duty driver, No. S57 Ken Smith, No. 13 Andy Galgoci and No. 43 Kevin Miller among those in the hunt. However, when the checkered flag flew nobody was able to get close enough to mount much of a challenge to Olger as he went on to his second straight Modified feature win with Smith second, Pomeroy in third, No. 79 Rich Robinson Sr. in fourth and No. 15 Rich Robinson Jr. in fifth.

The Carl McCrumb Memorial Smokers Club Street Stock $300 feature rolled out next with a 16 car field set to go 20 laps for the added prize money and plaque. The early race leader was the No. 27 of Calvin Jacques with No. 51 Mike Fecko in hot pursuit. Street Stock hot shoes No. 11 Josh Loomis and No. 87 David Mielke hooked up mid pack to make their way up front with Loomis getting the lead around lap five over Jacques, Mielke and No. 01X Randy Radabaugh. On about lap six Mielke would spin and go to the r erar of the field for the incident. At about lap eight Jacques' night would end as his car went up in smoke and a multi car wreck woud follow involving among others No. 92 Charlie McKenzie, No. M2 Mike Pashak, No 78 Kevin Scoviak and Mielke. Taking the brunt of the wreck was Mielke, whose night would end following the incident. At the checkered flag Loomis would come home victorious over Radabaugh.

The Miller Lite UMP Late Model feature would come down to a battle between two of the best drivers in the state as No. 21 David Hilliker had one of his best showings in weeks and would get the early lead. Looking unbeatable, Hilliker would soon be challenged by No. 6M Dona Marcoullier. For several laps the two would go side by side for the lead with Marcoullier going low and Hilliker using the high side. After many laps Marcoullier would get by Hilliker and claim the feature win, his second straight at Mt. Pleasant. Hilliker would hold on for second place and No. 6 Donnie Marcoullier took third place.

Another car would go up in smoke in the NAPA Modified Mini Stock feature as the night of No. 25 Cindy Malcolm would come to an abrupt end. No. 68 Trever Fedewa held the lead and wouldn't give it up as the young gun marched to his first feature win of the season over No. 21 Derick Neitling.

Wrapping up the night was the Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini feature where No. 143 Cyndi Gonzalez made her season debut and looked like she might get the win. However, after the halfway mark, No. 711 Chris Wiggins, subbing for regular driver Bob Baltierrez, made his way to the top spot and would not be caught as he picked up the feature victory over No. 62 Steve Keeler and No. 36 Richie Haynes.

This Friday, Aug. 14 is another big show at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway with a full show plus the Woof Classic Miller Lite UMP Late Model $1,500 to win special and a $750 to win Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified special, presented in part by the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. The
"Woof Classic" Late Model feature is a 40-lap event in memory of Mt. Pleasant Speedway Promotional Director Bill Long's father, William Long who died toward the end of last year at age 64 from a stroke.
