Rain showers rolled through Mt. Pleasant during the late afternoon and with the forecast calling for more potential rain throughout the evening, Mt. Pleasant Speedway owner/promoter Betty Crook had no choice but to cancel racing action for the Friday, July 17 show.
The cancellation, only the second in 12 weeks, means fans will have to wait another week to see the NeSmith Ultimate Champion Late Model Series cars make an appearance at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway.
Next week, Friday, July 24, Mt. Pleasant Speedway will make another attempt at becoming only the second track in Michigan to host the UCLMS cars.
Running regularly on Saturdays at I-96 Speedway, the UCLMS is a new series that runs on a crate motor.
"The crate motor is an economical, built-to-last motor, that GM puts out for $5,000," said I-96 Speedway public relations spokesperson Richard Bila. "The idea is to keep the cost down and keep the low-budget racer in racing and in the Late Models."
In its first season of racing at I-96, the series draws 18 to 20 racers each week and includes such racing legends as Hall of Famers Kris Patterson, Roger Wing, 2009 inductee, current point-leader Rick Stout, and Jeff Kohn.
"It brings together the best of the best in the area," Bila said.
"It's something new in Michigan and I think it's the up and coming thing in Late Model racing," Patterson said.
By running the same motor, Bila said the competition is closer and more exciting for the fans.
"The field is kept closer together and very seldom do you get a driver that checks out and leaves the field behind," he said.
Because the emphasis is on the driver with this series, it also opens up opportunities for drivers just starting out.
As an example, former Mini Stock champion Trevor Sloan, who now is a regular in the UCLMS has been able to break into Late Model racing and even has a feature win this season.
"Crate racing brings out the talent of the driver and not their pocketbook," said driver Christian Rayburn, son of legendary race car builder C.J. Rayburn, who was possibly making the trip from Indiana to Mt. Pleasant for the original show. "Everything is fueled up and tamper resistant so everyone is on the same playing field."
The July 24 Mt. Pleasant Speedway UCLMS feature will go for 25 laps and $1,000 and the show will also include the regularly scheduled Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified Special, Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort Modified Mini Stock $300 and Stock Mini $200 specials, and it will be Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club night. Racing at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway begins at 7:45 p.m.
