With the calendars turning to July and Americans all over preparing to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend, the Mt. Pleasant Speedway hosted Budweiser Mid-Season Championships on Friday, July 3, marking the unofficial halfway point of the racing season.
Prior to the night's action, the Mt. Pleasant Speedway staff hosted an autograph night in the main grandstand parking area where fans had an opportunity to mingle with the drivers and get items signed.
In honor of the Fourth of July holiday, current point leaders Justin Robinson No. X1 in the Miller Lite UMP Late Model, Troy Marciniak No. 8 in the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified, David Mielke No. 87 in the Smokers Club Street Stock, Jeff Fowler No. 29 in the NAPA Modified Mini Stock and Shane Aescheliman No. 53 in the Mt. Pleasant/Clare Automotive Stock Mini classes took a parade lap around the track with USA flags.
Features were lined up by point standings with the current point leaders on the pole in all the five divisions.
Rolling out first was the Smokers Club Street Stock Mid-Season Championship feature with Mielke and Josh Loomis No. 11 making up the front row. The two young competitors came into the night separated by a mere one point. During the race it also was apparent the winner would come from the front row starters as Loomis held the lead for most of the race, but Mielke was knocking on his door each and every lap. When the checkered flag flew Loomis would pick up his fourth feature win of the season with Mielke in second. There also was a door to door battle for third that went to the scorekeepers and would see Greg Tragis No. 49 get third over Tom Hodges Jr. No. 32H and Ray Devericks No. D1 in fifth.
A small field was on hand for the Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini Mid-Season Championships, where point leader Aescheliman would add to his lead by getting the feature win over "Taco" Bob Baltierrez No. 711 and Steve Keeler No. 62.
The big dogs of the Miller Lite UMP Late Model class were up next for their 30-Lap Mid-Season Championship feature with Robinson and Adam Thrush No. 91 in the front row. On the drop of the green flag Robinson would get the jump for the lead. Making the run from fifth to second early was Eric Spangler No. 27. Spangler would drop his car low to go for the lead and while doing so slip his car off the track and fall back to 10th place. Coming even further back was Ryan Vanderveen No. 23V, who began in 16th place and passed cars left and right before winding up in a battle for the lead with Robinson and Mark Andersen No. 85, who started eighth. As the checkered flag flew, Andersen had the win, with Vanderveen in second and Robinson third, Kevin Reeve No. 117 and Carl Reis No. 6R completed the top five.
A season-high 12 NAPA Modified Mini Stock cars were on hand for their Mid-Season Championships with Fowler and Derick Neitling No. 21 lining up first and second to start the race. Just as they have all season, Fowler and Neitling would go at it for the win, and this time would finish just as they lined up, with Fowler getting the win, and Neitling second. Making his return to the Mt. Pleasant Speedway after several weeks off because of an early season crash was two-time defending champion Steve Detwiler No. 0D. Detwiler would end up in third place in the feature, followed by Joie Hanson No. 007 and Trever Fedewa No. 68 to complete the top five.
A 30-Lap Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified Mid-Season Championship feautre would be the final race of the night as Marciniak and four-time Mt. Pleasant champion Rich Robinson Jr. No. 15 completed the front row. In a close battle with Robinson for the top spot with under 10 laps to go, Marciniak got too high and sent his car spinning off the track, which forced him to go to the back of the field. Undaunted Marciniak would work his way back to a seventh place finish. The biggest mover of the night was Zack Olger No. 0X who started 14th and climbed through the field to finish second to Robinson Jr., who would grab his third feature win of the season. Rounding out the top five, were Steven Hilliker No. 21, who worked his way from 11th starting position, Chad Spencer No. 39, who was racing for the first time ever in a Modified car after several years in the Street Stock class, and Kevin Miller No. 43.
Friday, July 10 is a full show with an American Legion $1,200 Miller Lite UMP Late Model special plus a Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort $300 Smokers Club Street Stock special. On Friday, July 17 the Mt. Pleasant Speedway is giving fans a chance to see the Crate Late Models in a special night of racing.
