Daggett Wows Crowd as Sprints Invade Mt. Pleasant Speedway

It was a beautiful summer night on Friday, June 26 as the ASCS SOD Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP made their return to the Mt. Pleasant Speedway for the first time since 2005.

An impressive field of 26 sprints arrived at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway to battle it out for the 25-lap feature.

In addition to the sprints, Mt. Pleasant also hosted their regular classes of Chuck’s Discount Foods UMP Modifieds, Smokers Club Street Stocks, NAPA Modified Mini Stocks, and Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Minis. The Miller Lite Late Model division had the week off.

Before the official action got underway, there was some unfinished business to take care of from the June 19 week with makeup features in Smokers Club Street Stock, NAPA Modified Mini Stock and Mt. Pleasant & Clare Automotive Stock Mini classes.

In the makeup June 16 Street Stock 15-lap feature Josh Loomis No. 11 picked up the victory as he held off charges of David Mielke No. 87, Tom Hodges Jr. No. 32H and Greg Tragis No. 49. With the win Loomis closed the gap on Mielke in the Street Stock point battle.

The makeup Modified Mini Stock 15-lap feature rolled out next and as many of the battles have throughout the season, the race came down to Derick Neitiling No. 21 and Jeff Fowler No. 29 with Neitling edging Fowler for the win, followed by Mike Schnettler No. 88, Trever Fedewa No. 68 and Mark Eastman No. 89.

In the makeup Stock Mini 10-lap feature, Shane Aescheliman No. 53 continued his winning ways by defeating Greg Lammerand No. 44 and Bob Baltierrez No. 711.

With all the makeup events out of the way, it was now time for the regular show.

The SOD Sprints came out first for the first of three heat races. In heat number one, Ryan Grubaugh No. 00 got the win, with Steve Irwin No. 30 getting the win in heat race number two and Gregg Dalman No. 49T picking up heat race number three’s win.

In the SOD Sprints four-car dash, Dustin Daggett No. 2M won in dominating fashion, while Troy Chehowski No. 21T advanced to the feature by winning the semi-feature.

In the 20-car, 25-lap SOD Sprints feature, Irwin started on the pole, along side Ryan Ruhl No. 27.

Daggett grabbed the top spot on lap 15 after the only caution and went on to dominate the field en route to his sixth win of the season. Following Daggett was Irwin, Dalman, Ruhl, and Grubaugh in the top five.

In the Chuck’s Discount Foods UMP Modified 20-lap feature, Rich Robinson Jr. No. 15 got to the front early and proved to be the head of the class as he rolled to his second feature win of the season at Mt. Pleasant. Back in the field the battle was between Zack Olger, who was filling in for brother Luke, in the No. 0X UMP Modified, and Troy Marciniak No. 8 as the two drivers went back and forth for second. Olger held off Marciniak to grab second, with Marciniak third, Kevin Miller No. 43 and Chuck Powell No. 95 completed the top five.

The Smokers Club Street Stock 15-lap feature was a three-car train of Joe Pomeroy No. 55, Loomis, and Mielke. Mielke continued his rookie Street Stock season dominance by getting another feature win, followed by Loomis, Pomeroy, Rob Brillhart No. 77B and Tragis in the top five.

A 15-lap NAPA Modified Mini Stock feature was next, and Neitling had a huge lead and looked to have another feature all locked up when with five laps to go he pulled into the infield and the lead was assumed by Fowler. Joey Burch No. 16 took home second place, followed by Eastman, Schnettler and Fedewa.

The last race of the night was the Mt. Pleasant and Clare Automotive Stock Mini 10-lap feature where Aescheliman completed the evening sweep with the win over Baltierrez, George Iafrate No. 43 and Lammerand.

This Friday, July 3, the Mt. Pleasant Speedway begins the Fourth of July holiday weekend with Budweiser Mid-Season Championships in all classes and autograph night from 6 to 7 p.m.
