Marcoullier, McCaul win topless features at Mt. Pleasant

Although the forecast called for strong thunderstorms, the weather man was proved wrong, at least for awhile, and the Mt. Pleasant Speedway was able to get its seventh consecutive night of racing action in on Friday, June 19. A strong field of Miller Lite UMP Late Models and Chuck’s Discount Foods UMP Modifieds showed up for the topless special, where drivers removed the roofs from their cars to give fans a glimpse of the work that goes on behind the wheel. There was also racing in the Smokers Club Street Stock, NAPA Modified Mini Stock, and Mt. Pleasant & Clare Automotive Stock Mini classes. With all the other surrounding tracks having cancelled their racing due to the weather, Mt. Pleasant pulled in some new comers including Steve Fairbanks No. 3 and Phil LaLonde No. 05 in the Late Models and hot shoes Marc Kurth No. 00  and defending Xtreme 100 winner John McCaul No. 27 in the Modified's.

The Miller Lite UMP Late Model feature was one of the best in recent memory at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway. Zack Olger No. 0X got the early lead, but midway through the race Dona Marcoullier No. 6Ma began to make his charge to the front, as did Eric Spangler No. 27. Marcoullier made his move using the low groove, while Spangler decided the high side was best. Marcoullier would eventually grab the lead, but Olger and Spangler would not give up and for several laps the three would go side by side for the top spot. When the checkered flag flew, Marcoullier would continue his red-hot 2009 season and get the feature win. Following Marcoullier were Olger, Spangler, Mark Andersen No. 85, Scott Baker No. 13, Alvie Haynes No. X1, Donnie Marcoullier No. 6T, LaLonde, Justin McNeill No. 15 and Adam Thrush No. 91 to complete the top 10.

The Chuck’s Discount Foods UMP Modified class was next for their topless 25-lap feature. The race shaped up as a battle between Troy Marciniak No. 8 and McCaul, with McCaul getting the lead first.  McCaul would raise his left front off the surface as he blazed around the track. On a restart Marciniak would jump inside and get a slight lead over McCaul as the two drivers went back and forth in the lead. Steady heavy rain finally hit at lap 16 and the race had to be called. Going back to the last completed lap, the win went to McCaul, with Marciniak second. Completing the top 10 was Ken Smith No. S57, Kurth, Cody Bauer No. 19, Travis Stemler No. 2, Craig Vance No. 42, Roger Steig No. 22, Jeremy Holman No. 18, and Rich Robinson Sr. No. 79.

With the rain, the Street Stock, Modified Mini Stock and Stock Mini features will be made up Friday, June 26. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. sharp with the Street Stock make up feature, followed by the four cylinder make up features and then the regular show which includes the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP, as well as Chuck’s Discount Foods UMP Modifieds.
