A season-high 30 cars were on hand in the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified class on Friday, May 29 at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway for the Taco Boy sponsored $750 to win feature.

In addition to the modified special, the night also brought a full show of racing in the Miller Lite Late Model, Smokers Club Street Stock, NAPA Modified Mini Stock and Mt. Pleasant & Clare Automotive Stock Mini divisions.

As the night began  the Miller Lite Late Models, although down in numbers for the night, made up for it in quality. In the first eight-lap heat race, Dona Marcoullier No. 6M of Houghton Lake picked up the victory over Eric Spangler No. 27 of Lake City and Justin Robinson No. X1 of Shepherd, David Hilliker No. 21H of Midland and Brian Nickerson No. 21N of Vestaburg. The second heat race also packed some veteran stars, but it was 19-year-old Adam Thrush No. 91 of Farwell who grabbed the win over Zack Olger No. 0X of St. John's, Donnie Marcoullier No. 6 of Houghton Lake, Carl Ries No. 6R of Blanchard and Brad Buskirk No. 45 of Alma.

With 30 modifieds, the night called for three heat races and one semi-feature to set the field for the 30-lap main event. In the first heat Mt. Pleasant Speedway newcomer Shannon Fisk No. 42 of Lowell took the win over Kevin Miller No. 43 of Mt. Pleasant, Ryan Ritchie No. 32X of Gladwin, Tim Stemler No. 22 of Portland, and Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Famer Donnie Roberts No. 63 of Gladwin. The second heat race would find Chuck Powell No. 95 of Harrison in victory lane over Darrin Easlick No. 71 of Farwell, Chris Wiggins No. 711 of Mt. Pleasant, David Doty No. 17 of Shepherd and Rich Robinson Sr. No. 79 of Shepherd. In the final UMP Modified heat race, Todd Feutz No. 18 of Ada grabbed his first-ever Mt. Pleasant Speedway victory over Steven Hilliker No. 21 of Midland, Scott Payton No. 711P of Gaylord, Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Famer Bob Kingen No. 84 of West Branch, and Mickey Carman Jr. No. 31 of Crystal.

With 20 spots open for the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified feature, the top five in the semi-feature would qualify for the $750 to win main event. As the semi-feature got underway 14 cars would be fighting for the top five spots. Making his return to the Mt. Pleasant Speedway for the first time in 2009, Joe Fowler No. 19F of St. Charles grabbed the win, followed by Rich Robinson Jr. No. 15 of Mt. Pleasant, Travis Stemler No. 2 of Portland, Troy Marciniak No. 8 of Muskegon and rookie modified driver Andy Galgoci No. 13 of Mt. Pleasant, who held off three-time Mt. Pleasant Speedway track champion Bob Hutson No. 09X and Craig Vance No. 42 of Midland among others.

The Smokers Club Street Stocks also lined up for two heat races with current point leader and rookie David Mielke No. 87 of Gladwin grabbing another win over newcomer Terry Humphreys No. 56, Mike Sparks No. 91 of Otterlake, Dale Kaake Jr. No. 9K of Tennessee and Greg Tragis No. 49 of Harrison. In the second heat race, Josh Loomis No. 11 of Weidman picked up the victory over Rob Brillhart No. 77B of Crystal, Calvin Jacques No. 27 of Caro, Raymond Deverecks No. D1 of Oil City and Mt. Pleasant Speedway newcomer Mike Higdon No. 20.

The NAPA Modified Mini Stock class had another solid field and in the heat race Derick Neitling No. 21 of St. Charles got the win over Jeff Fowler No. 29 of Saginaw, Trever Fedewa No. 68 of Mt. Pleasant, Cindy Malcolm No. 25 of Harrison and Mike Schnettler No. 88 of Sanford, who made the move up to the modified mini class after three weeks in the Mt. Pleasant & Clare Automotive Stock Mini class.

The Mt. Pleasant & Clare Automotive Stock Mini heat win went to Shane Aescheliman No. 53 of Gladwin.

With all the heat races out of the way, it was now time for the night's main events. Up first was the Miller Lite Late Model 25-lap feature. Taking the early lead was Thrush, who held the lead over a strong battle for second between David Hilliker, Olger, Spangler and Justin Robinson. Thrush, a former two-time Mt. Pleasant Speedway Modified Mini Stock track champion in his third year in the Late Model class, held the lead for the entire race after strong pursuit from the rest of the field and picked up his first career Late Model feature win. Following Thrush across the line were Spangler, Olger, Robinson, Hilliker, Nickerson, Ries,, Buskirk, rookie Late Model driver James Neff No. 38, and Bob Harden No. 52 of Ovid to complete the unofficial top 10.

"This year has been my biggest year and we've made the most progression," Thrush said of getting his first career Late Model main event win.

With 20 cars making the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified $750 to win feature special, a first lap eight-car pile up knocked out four cars including Robinson Sr., Doty, Galgoci and Kingen. As the race continued Feutz was the dominant car and quickly began setting his sights on lapping cars. When it was all over Feutz picked up his first ever Mt. Pleasant Speedway feature win, over Steven Hilliker No. 21 of Midland, Tim Stemler No. 22 of Portland, Kevin Miller, Ritchie, Scott Payton, Fowler, Robinson Jr. and Marciniak to round out the top 10.

"I just tried to keep my car down to the bottom and not let anyone by me," Feutz said after his win.

In the Smokers Club Street Stock 20-lap feature, it was a four car battle for the win between Mielke, Loomis, Humphreys and Kaake Jr. A spin early by Mielke forced him to the back of the field. Loomis would grab the lead and roll from there to his first feature win of 2009 at Mt. Pleasant. The rest of the top 10 was Sparks, Brillhart, Humphreys, Kaake Jr., Tragis, Mielke, Higdon, Deverecks, and Mike Fecko No. 51 of Gladwin.

The NAPA Modified Mini Stock 15-lap feature early lead went to Joe Hanson No. 007, but after he got a bit too high, Joey Burch No. 16 of Rosebush took the lead before his car broke, sending Jeff Fowler to the top spot on lap six. Fowler would not give up the lead from there and go on to grab his second feature win of the season, over Neitling, Hanson, Mark Eastman No. 89 of Midland, Schnettler, Fedewa, Malcolm, Jeff McKenzie No. 15 of Clare and Burch.

The final race of the night was the Mt. Pleasant & Clare Automotive Stock Mini 10-lap feature which saw Aescheliman get his first feature win of the season over Greg Lammerand No. 44 of Farwell and Bob Baltierrez No. 711 of Alma.

This Friday, June 5 is another special in the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified class as the Modified Girls sponsor a $750 to win event. It's also Police and Fireman Appreciation night, along with a full show of racing in all classes at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway. Gates open at 5 p.m. with the first race at 7:45 p.m.
