Michigan and Ohio race fans got to see some of their former short track stars competing at MIS in both the ARCA RE/MAX series race and the Camping World Truck Series event at MIS this weekend. There were quite a few names that are very familiar to anyone who has attended some of the short tracks throughout Michigan, NW Ohio, and N. Indiana.
Unfortunately, for the Michigan race fans, fan favorite Johnny Benson Jr. was dismissed from his truck ride just a few days before the series traveled to the Irish Hills. Let's hope Johnny lands a good ride s
oon as he has way too much talent to overlook for very long.
For a long time Toledo and Flat Rock Speedway race fan like myself, there are few bigger names than the Cook family. Both Terry Cook, who has competed in the Truck Series for many years, and brother Jerry were frequent winners and champions at both Flat Rock and Toledo. Terry started out racing a Monte Carlo Street Stock at Flat Rock and won the Late Model Championship in 1989-90. Terry is currently 7th in points in the trucks while Jerry has been a crew member for Joe Gibbs the last few years in the Cup garage. Their dad Harold Cook won Late Model championships once at Flat Rock and three times at Toledo in the 80s. Terry's crew chased the handling on the No. 25 Tundra all day, but he was able to end up the day with a solid 10th place finish.
Another driver in the Camping World Trucks with past success at Toledo is Johnny Sauter, who was the winner of the ASA race in 2001. Johnny had a spin midway through the race, but recovered to finish 16th. Former Kalamazoo Speedway veteran racer Andy Ponstein was also entered in the truck event this weekend. Unfortunately for Andy, his truck went to the garage early in the race
with mechanical issues
The ARCA 200 mile event also had a few names familiar to fans of Toledo Speedway with Canadian driver Terry Jones entered in the field in his No. 30. Terry has won two Sportsman features in 2009, and had a good top 10 run going at MIS until an unfortunate brush against the wall on Lap 85. Another area driver in the ARCA event was Michael Simko, who developed a lot of worldwide attention after an altercation with Don St. Dennis during the 2007 Glass City 200. Robb Brent and Brad Smith were the last two SE Michigan drivers entered in the event. No ARCA race would be complete without discussing perennial champion Frank Kimmel who not only garnered his very first ARCA win at Toledo in 1994, but has followed that one with an amazing eight more wins at the half mile with several at Flat Rock as well. Even though some short track fans may not favor the action on the big speedways, I always have a lot of fun watching our short track stars try their skills at 180 mph.
