Between Rain Drops with Bob Steele

Opening Night for Merritt Speedway turned out to be a wet one as overnight storms and early morning rain forced Rod and Rick Ancel to cancel the 2009 opening day for Merritt Speedway back on May 9th.
Mother Nature hasn’t played nice with Merritt so far this spring, with a rain out, a near freeze out, and general conditions which don’t make for great race spectating.

Last Saturday Night was a nice exception, as a beautiful Memorial Day weekend basking the track in a warm summer-like evening.  We can only hope the same holds true for next Saturday Night as Spring Championships on the card with a full slate of racing scheduled.

While in Merritt for opening night and while trying to stay dry, we had the opportunity to to sit with Bob Steel, Merritt Speedway’s official track photographer.
Bob started going to Merritt when he was 13 years old.  They came up from Beaverton and made the trip several times a year.

In the early 80’s, Bob moved to the east coast and became involved in with the Big Blocks Modifieds and the East Coast racing scene.

in 1990, Bob moved back to Northern Michigan and became reacquainted with Merritt Speedway.  In the late 90’s, he started doing some photography at the track and in 2005 following Rod Ancel’s purchase of the facility became the official track photographer.

One of Bob’s hallmarks is his follow through when it comes to the finished products.  Its not just good photos, but its making them look good after its been shot so when its printed it looks great.
Another key attribute is Bob’s knowledge of the racers.  I know these guys pretty good, sometimes I can tell something is going to happen before it does and that allows me to get into position and capture a shot that most photographers would miss.

Starting this week and continuing through the balance of season you’ll find the Winner’s Spotlight weekly in the MARC Times Racing News & Michigan RAcing Scene.
The Winner’s Spotlight is brought to you by Merritt Speedway and Photos of the Moment, aka Bob Steele.

We ask you to support your local track photographer and check out the galleries of Photos of the Moment.
