Kinross Anne Wilson Memorial follow up

Fifty seven cars filled the pit area at the Kinross Speedpark Friday night for the second annual Ann Wilson Memorial race. Threatening skies kept the show moving quickly as incoming rain was moving toward the area.

The program ran non-stop with race after race completed. Rain did hit late in the show washing away some of the heat races and most of the feature events.

Bud Gray III looped his Late Model on lap one of the Four Car Dash causing some early excitement. He regained his spot on the complete restart and won in a very close battle. The heat race had the top three cars run nose to tail for many laps with Donnie Varcoe Jr. leading the train. Varcoe finished first with Josh Ware second and Jerry Artuso third.

The Factory Stock class didn't see much track time with the fastest four cars running their only race. The field stayed door to door almost the entire race with Paul Fox taking the checkered flag.

John Clawson made an unbelievable move diving to the inside in turn three to take the lead and the win in the Pure Stock Dash. The Pure Stock Heat race was probably the best and closest race this class has seen in years. The field was three wide in turn one at the start and four wide by turn four. Brad Leach was the early leader with heavy traffic throughout the pack. John Clancy ran a close second for many laps on the outside of the Leach car. Barry Glenn got loose on the front stretch but wasn't able to save the car causing him to get into the back of Randy Touchtone bringing out the only yellow of the race. Dan Shumbarger had a great restart to take the lead and held on the rest of the way for the win.

The 4 Cylinder Four Car Dash was another great race. Dan Autore got a great run exiting turn two to launch to the lead and take the win. Erica Pietrangelo started at the back of the pack in the Australian Pursuit and blew by everyone in front of her to take the checkered flag in this event.

The modified class was the featured class of the evening with a fifty three lap feature event scheduled. The Four Car Dash was extended to ten laps and two heat races were run setting the starting lineup for the feature event. The first few races had plenty of excitement and an unusual amount of cautions.

George Wilson survived a first lap tap and spin to win a very tight race in the Four Car Dash. The field went three wide into turn one in the first of two modified heats causing a multi-car spin and a complete restart. The second start again went three wide but the cars sorted themselves out and put on a great race. James Brown powered his way to the front and ran away with the win. The second heat saw great side by side racing with Joe Deisler and John Clawson racing at the front of the pack. Clawson dropped his right side off the front stretch losing just enough momentum to give up his position. Deisler stayed out front and took the win.

The Ann Wilson Memorial Feature event saw sixteen cars take the green flag. The cars roared by the flag stand with John Clawson taking the early lead. Joe Deisler followed with the field starting to go single file. Corey St. Louis spun on the backstretch to bring out the first caution. The second place car of Deisler left the track under caution with oil leaking from his car. Dennis Uhlman made several attempts to get by Clawson with George Wilson and Travis Eddy all over the back of the leaders. Clawson appeared to lose power in front of the field getting spun in turn four and leaving the track with the help of a wrecker. Ulhman took over the lead with Wilson and Mav MacDonald battling hard behind him. MacDonald got sent to the back when he bumped Wilson causing a spin and another yellow. The top four cars were racing hard with lap traffic becoming an issue. Travis Eddy began pulling away with the lead but dropped from the pace and went to the pits with an expired engine. Wilson took over first and survived another spin in front of the field. Ulhman tapped the Wilson car getting himself a trip to the back of the pack. Wilson had enough power on the restarts to stay in front of the field the rest of the way. There were a couple more cautions for cars spinning around the race track. With a few laps to go, rain began falling harder making the conditions impossible to finish safely. The race was called with Wilson first, Jay Palumbo second, and Mav MacDonald third. Trophies were awarded on the front stretch with each driver getting a chance to comment to the fans.

Racing action resumes next Friday at the Kinross Speedpark. For more information log onto www.kinrossspeedpark.com.
