Kinross and mother nature go head to head.

Early evening showers didn't dampen the spirits of racers and fans as rain moved through the Kinross area Friday night. Qualifying was rained out, but a season high car count and a large crowd enjoyed a complete show.

The starting lineups for heat races were determined by the season point standings, with cars making their first appearance of the year starting at the tail end of the field. The fastest cars weren't necessarily at the back of the heats, leading to runaway victories in a lot of the races. All five classes ran two heats each setting the stage for the feature events.

Mav McDonald, winner of both Modified heat races, didn't waste any time taking the lead in the Modified feature race. He pulled away from the field with George Wilson close behind. The leaders were navigating through lap traffic when a spin by Keith King on the backstretch brought out the yellow and bunched up the field. The top three cars of McDonald, Wilson, and Jay Palumbo drove away on the restart and raced hard and clean to the finish. They stayed in the same order with McDonald earning the victory.

John Clawson appeared to have the car to beat with two wins in the Late Model heat races. Jerry Artuso was the early leader in the feature with Josh Ware running a close second. The Artuso car started to slide up the track in the corners leaving the bottom lane open for Ware. Ware drove by on the inside and the field stretched out and ran to the finish. Josh Ware took the checkered with Artuso second, and John Clawson third.

Both Todd Jackson and Cecil Piche had dominating victories in both their heat races in the Factory Stock division. Jackson started in the sixth position and quickly moved through the field in the feature. Jackson reeled in the leader  Larry Young Jr. passing him on the outside. Heavy traffic throughout the field kept several other fast cars stuck in their positions. Jackson won with Larry Young Jr. second, and Paul Fox third.

John Clawson, driving in his second class of the night, kept the checkered flags in the Pure Stock class all to himself. He won both Pure Stock heat races and dominated again in the feature. Clawson came from deep in the field and drove past the leaders building a big lead before taking the win. Bill Cryderman finished second and John Clancy third.

Ron Etcher won both of his heat races in the 4 Cylinder class. Jakob Bordage and Al Johnson were winners in the other two races. The feature race had a nice start with BJ Marcoux running up front early. The field went single file and ran this way before a yellow regrouped the field when a car spun in turn two. Bordage had a great restart and held off a hard charging Ron Etcher for the win. BJ Marcoux finished in the third position. Bordage and Marcoux would be later disqualified following post race inspection, giving the win to Ron Etcher.

A scheduled week off will give racers and volunteers a break this coming week. Racing action will resume Friday, June 19th at the Kinross Speedpark. For more information log onto www.kinrossspeedpark.com. Credits of the race reacap go to Steve Lawson. I was busy this week with photography in the infield as our weekly photographer was absent due to prior commitment.
