Dixie Motor Speedway always has a little something for everyone on race night and last Friday was no exception.
As fans pulled in to the Speedway parking lot, they were welcomed by Fire trucks with buckets raised and lights flashing for Civil Servant night. Bikes were given away to the young Dixie fans and the Great Lakes Super Cup Series debuted this season.
The Great Lakes Super Cup Series are high speed half scale short track race cars. They are a little larger than a ½ scale stock car, are capable of speeds over 100 mph and offer an affordable step-up from Go-Karts. This series will be running on local short tracks all over Michigan this season.
The Series gave fans a great show. Morgan Baird of Grass Lake, MI took the lead early in the 25-lap feature and held off hard charges from Dave Wilson of Parma, MI and Dave Harrison of Munith, MI for the win.
A field of 20 Pro Late Models came out for a 30-lap feature. Joe Hodgeson Jr. of Davison, MI led the first half of the feature until veteran driver, Mark Klein of Bridgeport took the front spot and won his first 2009 feature event. 2008 Rookie of the Year, Blake Childers was fast qualifier with a 16.180.
Modifieds Nick Clemens dominated the final laps of the 30-lap feature and brought home his first 2009 Dixie Feature win.
Defending Sportsman Champion Kevin Harder took the lead from heat winner Joe Cunningham with 10 laps to go and held his ground all the way to the finish line.
Jake Thompson broke the Sport Stock Track record with a qualifying time of 18.417. Thompson also won the heat, but had mechanical problems in lap 10 of the feature. It was Jeremy Snellenberger of Bridgeport who took home the checkered flag after leading all 15 laps of the feature event.
Defending track Champion, Ed Newman Jr. won his first Street Stock event of the year and veteran Al Boitel Jr. won the Street Stock May 15th Make-Up Feature.
Next week is Church Youth Group Night and Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club Night at Dixie!
Fans won’t want to miss the exciting feature events in the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends Series and the Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, Bombers, and Figure 8 Divisions. Plus, local area churches are strapping their youth pastors into Go-Karts for the Faster Pastor Race during intermission.
