The Michigan Traditional Sprints made their first appearance of the season in front of a packed house at Crystal Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 24th. ![]()
27 Non wing sprint cars from 3 states and 2 country's entered Sunday nights event and put on a spectacular show.
"These cars are about the fastest things you'll see at most tracks" said a sprint fan in Crystal's 1000+ person crowd.
On the track, 2007 MTS Champion Steve Irwin wrecked his primary car Friday night and looked for redemption on Sunday as he led all 25 laps from the pole position to take his first feature victory of the season. Mark Broughman made many attempts to challenge Irwin but with pressure from third place finisher Landon Simon he was unable to take the top spot from Irwin.
Steve said "Starting on the pole made it easier, the track took rubber early, so I spent the first couple of laps finding the good spots, but once we did, we were gone. The motor ran good and tire lasted and everything went fine." Asked about his 2009 season, Irwin said "We are going to run for points, so this race was a good win for us. We needed a good run to start the season. When we run in Ohio, we run with some of the other series and they are tougher. But this was a real good show, a lot of good cars. We have full intentions of running for and winning the championship this year.
The next race on the MTS schedule is is June 6th at Waynesfield Motorsports Park in Waynesfield, OH.
