I was off last week, taking a roadtrip with my dad. Because of this, I didn’t get to see Doug TerMeer drive his No.91 TerMeer Builders Chevy into victory lane at Illiana Motor Speedway’s half mile track. This was Doug’s first win in the MCT-SRL and from what I hear it was well earned as he made a “pass in the grass” to take the lead. Not only did he win the race, he also took over the points lead. Congrats Doug!
This week the MCT-SRL drivers were in Morris, IL at the Grundy County Speedway. Nine drivers made the grid at
the nicely banked third-miler, including MCR Dwarf Car driver Craig Curtis, who was back with us for the first time since the “real” racing season started. “It was too dark to work on my car tonight, so I thought I’d run with you guys instead” Curtis said with a chuckle. Also making their first appearances in the MCT-SRL Fall season were New York’s Sean Case and our prior season’s second place driver, Ken Shook of Montrose. Derek Lacey, who has real world racing experience at Dixie and Owasso was making his second start with the league. For Lacey, now living in Southern California, the on-line racing experience is an opportunity to stay connected with his Michigan racing roots. Last season’s champion, John Hernly put his No.64 TV Land Chevy on the pole for the 100 lap race, with a 15.273 second (77.784 mph) lap. I started next to him on the front row in my No.73 Ultra Tuff Non-Skid Coatings Dodge, by putting in a 15.314 second (77.576 mph) lap.
The race started and the drivers settled in for a nice long green-flag run. Hernly caught the end of the field by lap 23 and had a comfortable lead on second place Curtis in the No.74. The yellow came out for the first time on lap 39 when the No.77 of Sean Case did a solo spin on the exit of turn four. Everyone used the opportunity to take on fresh tires. The race restated on lap 45 with Kalamazoo’s Phil Loedeman in the No.0 getting the free pass. It was a short lived reprieve however as Doug TerMeer in the No.91 hit the apron and slid up into Loedeman’s car on lap 47, bringing out caution number two. KC Foote in the No.51 received the lucky dog and the race restarted on lap 53.
Caution number three came out on lap 68 when Foote was passing the lapped No.37 of Derek Lacey. Foote was under Lacey and slid up on the exit of turn four. The contact sent Lacey’s car into the outside wall and then back across the track and into the path of Case’s No.77. Lacey’s car took a hard hit from the oncoming No.77. Case was the first car a lap down and after reviewing the incident the decision was to go ahead and award Case the lucky dog as there was no way for him to avoid hitting Lacey.
Up to this point it had been Hernly, Curtis and I running one, two, three, ever since the second lap. Curtis and Foote were the first two out of the pits and now they occupied the top two spots respectively, with Hernly in third and me now in fourth. Foote had a bad restart and Hernly quickly grabbed the second place position. I also had a bad restart, which caused me much embarrassment, when I shifted from third gear down to second, rather than up into fourth. The resulting spin immediately brought out another caution. Ken Shook picked up the lucky dog this time around.
The restart came on lap 79 with Hernly hounding Curtis for the top spot. Curtis let his Monster Energy Pontiac slide up the track just a bit on lap 85 and Hernly was able to get under him entering turn one. After a little trading of paint, Curtis relinquished the position. The yellow flag was displayed for the final time one lap later, when Case in the No.77 got into the back of TerMeer’s No.91, sending him around.
There were less than ten laps to go when the race got back under way and it was a dog fight for virtually every position. Hernly got a great restart and with everyone behind him beating and banging for a spot, he stretched out the lead and went on to take the checkered flag.
