MCT-SRL Berlin Race Recap: Aug. 13, 2009

Chad Finley in the No.29 leads the field to the green flag.Only one more race remains in this inaugural season for the Michigan Circle Track Sim-Racing League following last week’s run at Berlin. Eleven drivers showed up for practice, with nine of them going on to participate in the 150 lap event. ARCA/Remax driver Chad Finley was on hand to show the rest of the field a thing or two about getting around the fast .438 mile oval, posting a 15.53 second (101.391 mph) qualifying lap to take the pole. Starting next to him was Phil Loedeman from Kalamazoo with a 15.693 second (100.363 mph) lap.

The version of the track we were running this time around corrected the “oil slick” problem that drivers encounterePhil Loedeman gets a full view of Josh Walker's No.83.d during pre-season testing (see MCT-SRL Race Recap, Berlin April 9, 2009 ), however the track lacked a bit of grip overall. That particular issue proved to be a challenge for a number of drivers and attrition took its toll. The caution flag was thrown six times during the event and only three drivers, Finley, Loedeman and I, were still running at the end of the race, which finished up in that order.

The final race of the season will be on Aug. 20th, at the one-third mile Wall Township Speedway in New Jersey. With only 121 points separating the top three drivers it could be anyone’s championship. At the top of the leader board is John Hernly of Lansing. Hernly, driver of the No.64Craig Bristol gets a little too high on the back straight. TV Land Chevrolet, has been the class of the field all season, but has missed a few races along the way. Currently in the second spot is MCT-SRL League Administrator and Driver of the No.3 Ford, Craig Bristol from Witherbee, NY. Bristol sits 120 points behind Hernly and has been nipping at the leader’s heels all season long. Only one point behind Bristol is Ken Shook, driver of the No.34 Howe Racing Pontiac, from Montrose, MI. Shook has started in every race this season and although he has yet to chalk up a win, he has been getting consistently better throughout. Next week’s race to determine the Championship should be a fun for all involved.
