It was another night of hard racing, but after a couple of second place finishes, Don Colbath held off the other drivers to win the fifth pre-season race of the Michigan Circle Track Sim-Racing League. ![]()
The April 16th race took place at the Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA. Motor Mile, actually a .416 mile asphalt oval, with 506 foot long straights and 15 degrees of banking in the turns, lends itself to some good racing. Colbath qualified his No. 1 KCDC Motorsports Ford on the pole with a 16.126 second (92.869 mph) lap. Next to him was last week's winner, Florida's Mark Adams in the No. 28, who turned in a 16.170, ( 92.616 mph) qualifying run.
The green flag was in the air and almost immediately, the No. 36 of League Administorator, Craig Bristol suffered a fatal network dissconnect from the race server. The race stayed green and Sean Case in the No.77 graciously stepped up to take over the Race Official duties for the rest of the night to keep things going... and go they did. The yellow flew for the first time after 6 of the 100 laps were complete for two unrelated incidents. The first was the No. 31 of Louisville, KY's Randy Brown spinning on the exit of turn two, backing it into the outside wall. The other was Pete Gibson, another Louisville racer, in the No. 39 looping it as he entered turn one. The yellow flew again on lap 12 when Saginaw's Chuck Darling, winner of the Toledo and Madison events, self spun in turn four. Similar to Bristol, Darling was also plagued by network issues. He was already a few laps down as a result and was forced to retire from the event. Tom TerMeer in the No. 89 was also an early retiree from the race, dropping out on the same lap for reasons unkown.
Up front it had been Colbath's No. 1, Adams' No. 28 running one, two since the start of the race. On lap 18 Adams got loose exiting turn four, which allowed John Hernlyfrom Lansing, MI in the No. 64 to pull door-to-door with Adams' No. 28. Adams was able to hold off Hernly and maintain the second place position. Phil Loedeman of Kalamazoo in the No. 0 was able to capitalize on a bobble by the No. 74 of Craig Curtis and grap the fourth place spot on lap 22.
Things remained that way until lap 29, when Adams gave up six positions when got extremely loose exiting turn two. He was able to recover and the race stayed under green. At the other end of the track, later that same lap, Loedeman in the No. 0 got loose exiting turn and with an assist from Curtis brought out the yellow for the third time that night. Lodeman and Adams, along with Mark Howland in the No. 57, Randy Brown in the No. 31 and Sean Case in the No. 77 all elected to pit. The race restarted on lap 34 and I almost immediately looped it bringing out yellow flag number four.
On lap number 43, Curtis in the No. 74 was able to get past Hernly's No. 64 to gram the second place spot, but Hernlytook it right back four laps later. Curtis now found himself racing withAdams for the third place position and two drivers tangled in turn four to bring out the caution on lap 49. Pit road was busy again with Howland, Curtis, Loedeman, Case and Gibson opting for fresh tires. Colbath and Adams elected to stay out, and when the green flag flew for the restart, it was Colbath and Adams again lined up one, two. Adams finally got a good run on Colbath on lap 72, but Colbath slammed the door on him. Adams was forced to check up, allowing Howland to slide by in the No. 57.
The leaders caught up with Plainwell, MI's Doug TerMeer in the No. 91 on lap 82. TerMeer who was running several laps down due to pit penalties had moved up the track to give the leaders plenty of room to pass. Unfortunately no good deed goes unpunished and TerMeer ended up too far out of the grove. The No. 91 slapped the turn four wall hard, then crossed the track, collecting Curtis in the No. 74 who was running fifth and the No. 77 of Case who was a lap down. Curtis had to pit, but was able to stay on the lead lap.
The end of the race was cast on lap 96 when Hernly in the No. 64 was putting pressure on Howland in the No. 57for the third position. Hernly tried for a bump-and-run, but Howland wouldn't hear of it. Howland cranked the wheel and managed to fish-tail it through the corner in front of Hernly without giving up the position. Behind Hernly, Craig Curtis had made a run to follow Hernly past Howland. When that didn't happen, Curtis was unable to check-up in time and ended up with a bump-and-run of his own, sending Hernly's car spinning. The race finished under yellow, Colbath first, Adams second, Howland third. Hernly was able to get his car refired just before getting lapped and finished in the severnth position. Through it all Colbath stayed in front, leading every lap of the race.
