Mother Nature washed out racing from Friday, but on Saturday Night the clouds cleared and racing kicked off for 2010 season at historic New Smyrna Speedway in Samsula, FL.

A strong contingent of Great Lakes area racers made the trip south including: John Long, Jack Landis, Bruce Gowand, Kelsey Steele, Zach Germain, David Wagner, Erik Jones, Becca Kasten, Cardell Potter, Wayne Smith, Donnie Varcoe, Robert Petrus Jr., Jimmy Novak III, and Travis Eddy.

Tour_Winner_ChristopherThe Tour Modifieds were up first and no racers from the Great Lakes region participated in the feature for this division.  The Tour Modifieds are the open wheel cars featured on television's MADHOUSE, though none of the MADHOUSE drivers participated.  However, noted "King of the Modifieds" Ted Christopher did make the trip down from New England and was the feature winner.

The ASA/Crate Late Models were up next and eight drivers representing the area were in the feature event.  David Wagner racing out of Akron, OH qualified 8th on the grid while thirteen year old Erik Jones of Bryon, MI qualified 11th. Rebecca (Becca) Kasten of Mequon, WI put her ASALM in the 12th spot on the grid.  Cardell Potter from Camp Douglas, WI made the show in the 16th spot with fellow Badger Wayne Smith of Onalaska, WI close behind qualifying 19th.  Donnie Varcoe, owner of Laird Raceway and veteran area racer from Sault Ste Marie, ONT qualified 21st.  23rd spot was filled by Canal Fulton, OH driver Robert Petrus Jr while Dryden, Michigan's Jimmy Novack III was forced to start from the rear following a post qualifying inspection DQ.

The winner was Stephen Nasse of Pinellas Park, FL.  Nassee started 7th and raced his way up to the front to bring home the checkered flag.  David Wagner finished 7th with Becca Kasten finishing 8th.  Thirteen year old Erik Jones finished 14th in his Port City No. 4J.  Novak finished in 20th

Up next were the Super Late Models.  Five area racers made the trip to New Smyrna andfoundthere way into the SLM Feature Race.  John Long from Niles, MI was the highest finisher, bringing his No. 32 super late model home with a strong 7th place finish.  Right on his back bumper was the No. 10 of Jack Landis from Lansing, MI. Representing the OSCCAR group from Canada was the No. 18 of Bruce Gowandfrom Grand Valley, ONT.  West Michigan favorite Kelsey Steele, the 16 year old young lady from Coopersville, MI managed a very respectable 19th place finishing position and Zach Germain from Columbus, OH had some tough luck (Zach spun on lap 3 of the race andmade contact with the outside wall ending his night early) and ended the night in 25th position.

There wasn't a lot of passing forward from deep in the pack in the Super Late Model feature event, as the Top Six drivers all finished in the Top Six positions.  There was some shuffling for positions among the lead six drivers as Tim Russell who started the race in the 7th spot made his way to the front to win the feature race.  John Long was able to move up from his 10th starting spot to finish 7th while Landis held onto his 8th spot all night long.

Travis Eddy racing out of Midland, Mi in the No. 78 Howe Racing Enterprises Chevrolet was qualified 6th, but moved up to 3rd on the grid when the top three qualifiers were all DQ'd.

Following the invert, Eddy started the race on the inside of the 2nd row which was good fortune as the race was marred by several accidents and caution flags in opening laps of the race.  Five times the yellow flew before Lap 10 but Eddy's luck ran out as he got caught up in a fray and got sent to the back.

When things finally started getting settled down, the No. 78 green machine started making its way towards the front and as the checkered flag came out Travis Eddy crossed the stripe in 4th place.  A post qualifying DQ moved Eddy up to 3rd in the official results, best finish among the Great Lakes area drivers racing on Saturday Night.  Eddy was the sole Great Lakes area driving participating in the IMCA/Flordia Modifieds.
