Troy Dewald has won the International 500 snowmobile race, becoming the first driver to win from the pole position since 1997 and the first driver to ever win on an Arctic Cat built sled.
Dewald, of Au Gres, has won six poles -- an I-500 record -- but didn't win until Saturday. He and fellow drivers Jeff Luenberger and Bryan Dyrdahl finished ahead of the team led by seven-time champion Corey Davidson of Holt, Minn. The team led by Gabe Bunke of Flint was third.
Retirement might be the only thing that can stop Troy Dewald. On Thursday, the Michigan native suffered a nasty wreck which totaled his primary sled and resulted in a broken scapula for Dewald. But that wasn't enough to either slow the 40-year-old, Au Gres, Mich., native, or keep him from winning his second consecutive International-500 Snowmobile Race here.
Driving for Cadarette Racing, Dewald and teammate Jeff Leuenberger also made I-500 history, becoming the first team ever to win the race aboard an Arctic Cat.
Dewald and Leuenberger, who lives in Freeland, Mich., edged Gentz Racing drivers Chad Dyrdahl, Ross Erdman and Kris Eichenberg by mere seconds.
Plagued by technical problems with the I-500 scoring system throughout the day, official times were not made available.
Sault Ste. Marie's Ted Ritchie was the top Canadian, placing fifth while driving for Team Torture.
"The pain was terrible and that made this win extra special," said Dewald, who crashed and broke his right scapula (shoulder blade) while testing the setup of the sled Thursday. "To come back after that big crash makes this feel great. But this might be it for me. I'm old and brittle, man."
Asked if he's serious about retiring, Dewald, who started from the pole position and ran an estimated 200 of the race's 500 laps, said: I don't know if I can even finish this race season."
Both Dewald and the 46-year-old Leuenberger, who's also seriously considering retirement, confirmed they were fortunate to even enter the race following Thursday's crash.
