Allan Brown Retiring

Allan Brown was the
publisher of the
National Speedway Directory
Allan E. Brown of Comstock Park plans on making a trip down to Valdosta, Ga., next summer.
“I hear that a new track is opening up,” Brown said. “It’s called Needmore Speedway, and I hear it’s a three-eighths mile dirt track.”
Brown announced this week that he is selling the National Speedway Directory, an annual publication he co-founded in 1975. But Brown said he still plans on getting to as many races as possible.
Brown’s book comes out each spring, just in time for the racing season. Brown and his wife Nancy hit the road, selling their books at tracks around the country. The couple has seen at least one race in all 50 states, and Brown estimated that he has visited about 2,000 tracks during his career.
However, Brown said it’s time to retire.
“I have known for a number of years that this was going to be it,” Brown said. “I turned 62 and had all intentions of having Uncle Sam pay my way. I have been doing this 30 some years, and I needed to step back a little bit.”
The National Speedway Directory is a compilation of every track in the United States and Canada, and it includes information about each facility, including its location, phone number, e-mail address, a description of the track and the type of racing.
Frost Motorsports, LLC, located in Wilmette, Ill., is purchasing the directory. Brown will remain on as a consultant for two years.
“National Speedway Directory is a highly respected publication,” Frost Motorsports owner Timothy Frost said in a release. “It is considered as the authoritative source for racing facility information. We are excited to continue the tradition, while exploring opportunities for growth.”
Brown was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame this past spring.
I asked Brown if he considered writing a book about his journeys, and he said he has no intentions of doing so. He said he is going to just concentrate on being a fan.
“I’m still hoping that one weekend a month, we will be able to high tail it out and go see a race,” Brown said. “The majority of the time, we will stay close by, visiting Michigan tracks. We will still go to our favorite races, like the U.S. Nationals in Cedar Lake Wisconsin, and the Knoxville Nationals. But we will be able to pick and choose when we go to the races.”
