News & Notes from the 2009 Fall MSPA Meeting

mspa_logoThe Michigan Speedway Promoter's Association held their 2009 Fall Membership Meeting on October 22nd at Michigan International Speedway to review the 2009 racing season, the issues within the Michigan Racing Industry and to establish foundations for the 2010 racing season.  Primary topics including MSPA Membership Expansion, Michigan's Proposed Ticket Tax and the MSPA Drivers & Promoter of the Year.
The MSPA voted to extend membership in the MSPA to neighboring facilities including those in Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.  The membership of the MSPA felt it was in the associations mission and to share the best practices learned by the MSPA membership with Michigan's regional facilities and to present the opportunity to learn from neighboring facilities best practices and processes.  Formal invitation letters will be drafted and distributed to invitees.
The MSPA addressed the State of Michigan's proposed Luxury Entertainment Tax, better known as the Ticket Tax.  In 2007, the Governor and Legislature of Michigan tried to impose a new tax on tickets to sporting events, concerts and movies in Michigan. This effort failed after strong opposition from tax payers.  Now the Governor has again proposed a 6-percent tax on all tickets to professional, college and minor league sporting events, and all entertainment events, which will raise the cost of tickets by almost $100 million a year.  This directly effects Michigan's Short Track Racing Community, the backbone of the Michigan Speedway Promoter's Association.  MSPA member Michigan International Speedway is part of the NoTicketTax.com Coalition and the MSPA in association with MIS agreed to support the No Ticket Tax effort.
The MSPA accepted nominations from members for the 2009 MSPA Drivers of the Year and 2009 Promoter of the Year.  These nominations will be accepted and voted upon by the membership prior to the 2010 Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club banquet where the winners will be announced.  The 44th annual MARFC banquet will be held on January 16th at DeCarlo's Banquet Center, in Center Line, MI
The MSPA is comprised of the following members : Auto City Speedway (Flint, Mi), Berlin Speedway (Grand Rapids, Mi), Butler Motor Speedway (Quincy, Mi), Crystal Motor Speedway (Crystal, Mi), Dixie Motor Speedway (Birch Run, Mi), Flat Rock Speedway (Flat Rock, Mi), Hartford Motor Speedway (Hartford, Mi), I-96 Speedway (Lake Odessa, Mi), Kalamazoo Speedway (Kalamazoo, Mi), Kinross Speedway (Sault Ste. Marie, Mi), Merritt Speedway (Houghton Lake, Mi), Michigan International Speedway (Brooklyn, Mi), Mid-Michigan Raceway Park (Palo, Mi), Mt. Pleasant Speedway (Mt. Pleasant, Mi), Mottville Speedway (White Pigeon, Mi), Norway Speedway (Norway, Mi), Owendale Speedway (Owendale/Bad Axe, Mi), Owosso Speedway (Owosso, Mi), Spartan Speedway (Mason/Lansing, Mi), Thunderbird Raceway (Muskegon, Mi), Tri-City Speedway (Auburn/Bay City, Mi), and Winston Motor Speedway (Rothbury, Mi)
