The double file restart has the potential to become the saving grace of NASCAR and to give credit where it is due.
This rule has put the onus on the crew chiefs in a major way. The #24 was junk mid way, yet he stayed in the top 7 until the caution. After the restart the cars that were stuck in say 15th-20th that were faster were now only a few positions back and he quickly dropped. With this format, those that have it, will rise, those that do not, oh well....
On the flip side, after staying out going for the rain dance victory failed, late pit moves allowed for a higher finish because of being bunched up on the last restart. General take for now, stick with it. It is resolving a few issues with one swipe.
Not racing lapped cars for the leaders, allowing passing at the front of the pack to count for position, allows the lapped cars a fair shake and being the first car a lap down and not in the way of the leaders.
This will force the crew chiefs to increase the midnight oil on passing early in dirty air and then allow the car to stay strong enough to protect the positions gained.
From a technical standpoint, this allows a little more freedom on adjustments, and the fans should benefit. No review needed on this one. Of course it is to early to grade it, because this was a perfect track to bring it in and it needs to be compared to a short track like Bristol.
I am actually proud of NASCAR with this move and bringing it in during the season. They are still in my doghouse, but when you start seeing someone try, you will take notice.
Yes, slowly but surely, the drama will return.
I enjoyed the video and audio of the Tony saga at the end of the race. The surround catching every sound of the motor going off and on, the in car shots, the announcers hype, all of it.
It made for drama I can appreciate.
Speaking of being a lap down, letting the leaders race the leaders, and giving guys a shot to overcome an early mistake, what’s the deal with mixing lead lap cars in with lapped cars on a short track ?
Yea, yea.. before you start “its always been that way”, “its tradition”, “don’t fix what isn’t broke”.
Is that just like no women in the pits, wearing short sleeve t-shirts inside the car, racing mirrors and mirror racing and having the flagman working from the track and standing on the infield ??
Listen, times change and rules change and sometimes tradition falls to the wayside.
Especially if it makes the racing better and it makes the show better.
Mixing lap down cars with lead lap cars, especially on a single file restart, mucks up the show and results in dampening the show.
Crystal Motor Speedway gets it right. As usual, Ron Flinn is ahead of the curve and has been using double-file restarts for over 2 years now. Crystal also puts all cars a lap down back on the lead lap after any yellow, and then lines them up at the back of the field and lets them get back to racing.
Utilizing racereceivers , they get the lineup in place and go back to racing in generally one or two yellow flag laps !!
Is there anything worse then any yellow flag that takes longer then 2 laps, especially if there isn’t a broken car or fluids on the track ??
I think anytime anyone wants to argue about a lineup, they should pull into the pits and take it up with the pit boss.
Meanwhile, let the racers go back to racing.
Its all about the show folks. Leaders racing the leaders for the win. 10th place and 11th place racing each other for 10th place and 11th place.
A guy who is bad fast and accidently spins out (or whom got spun out) early in the race getting his lap back and still having a shot to win. Twenty cars within a 100 feet of each coming out of Turn Three to take the green on every re-start.
That is get out of your seat action and Ron Flinn gets it and NASCAR gets it, why don’t you ?
