Well if you are anything like me you have been to race tracks all over the country following some form of racing either it being Nascar, ARCA, or even Indy Car racing.
A couple weeks ago, a friend and I drove 11 hours one way for a 35 lap race on the 1/2 mile high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn. Of course this was the special "seniors" event that was a special part of NASCAR's regular spring stop in the Tennessee hills.
We took off on our adventure to hopefully witness our favorite retired veteran Nascar driver Rusty Wallace win his 10th race at Bristol.
Just knowing that the likes of Cale Yarborough and Junior Johnson were going to be racing made the blood in my veins to pump high octane!
We got there at 3 am and slept in the car. We got up shortly after dawn and set up camp and were at the track by 10 a.m. to catch the day's first event - the Nationwide race. All the while, we were waiting to see that Miller Lite #2 Chevy pull out on to pit road.
Finally I see it. The car looks just like Rusty's last call car from 2005. WOW, look I see Junior Johnson, L.D. Ottinger, and Harry Gant. Oh look over there it's Rusty Wallace, the primary reason we drove 11 hours.
The race begins. To us it feels like 500 laps under the lights on a Saturday night. Rusty starts in 6th position. The green flag waves and the race is on! Rusty is on the move and starts passing cars right away and then he is up to 2nd behind Sterling Marlin. Marlin went on to win the race and Rusty finished 2nd.
Once more I have to settle with 2nd place. I have been to Bristol Spring and Summer races paying more than $500 a ticket to watch Rusty win and the closet is 2nd place twice. But, to see the smile on Rusty's face while he climbed out of the car made me believe I will be back to see Rusty win next year.
11 hours back home and counting the days till I can do it again next year. Crazy race fan? Nope, it's just me following my passion and love of the sport of racing.
