Michigan's hot shoes experienced beyond their years

Travel around any of the short tracks in Michigan, and you'll quickly realize the drivers previously most familiar to fans and competitors alike are changing. The likes of Grega, Felver and Bozell may still be competitive, but youngsters like Van Doorn and Finley (Chad - not Jeff or Doug) are moving to the forefront.

The latter, an "experienced" 17-year old, drove his #29 Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Parts Stores and Certified Service Centers Chevrolet to an impressive sixth place finish last month in the ARCA Menards 200 at Toledo Speedway.

Finley, in his ARCA debut and driving for Brad Keselowski, announced to the world his talent isn't just limited hometown tracks. Starting 24th in the 33 car field, Finley patiently and with the composure of drivers many years his senior, methodically worked his way through a tough field for his top-10 finish.

He has been a hot shoe at Spartan Speeday and Berlin Raceway in his outlaw super late model, and he'll be back in the #29 Chevy for ARCA events at Iowa Speedway on July 13, Berlin on July 25th and back at Toledo on Sept. 4th.

Like Finley, Johnny Van Doorn has enjoyed great success in his young career. While at the ripe old age of 21, Van Doorn has had a bit more "colorful" path to success.

Making his way early on in an outlaw super late model, Van Doorn has carved out an impressive career in the Champion Racing Series (CRA). Currently second in CRA points, Van Doorn won his first race in the '09 season campaign with an impressive run at Anderson Speedway on April 11. He backed that up with a second place finish in the series' next stop at Winchester Speedway on May 17, proving he is back to his 2007 CRA "Rookie of the Year" form.

Driving for his new team, KAOS Motorsports, he'll be back behind the wheel of the CRA car on June 10th at Berlin.

Equally impressive is the fact his 16 year-old brother, B

en, or "Butch" as he is known to all on the team, is sitting atop the pit box calling the shots as the team's crew chief.

"We fight like brothers most of the week," Johnny admits, "but he really knows his stuff. He works on the cars after school, and has been taking care of our shocks this year. We've been hooked up because of his great work.

"It was really cool winning at Anderson. Not only was it Butch's first win as a crew chief, but it was his shocks on the car - the first he had put together by himself. I felt as good for him as anyone after that win."

Van Doorn adds, "We've gained a lot of knowledge as a team. Everyone on the team has a specific role, and they do a great job carrying that out. We know our set ups, and we've got a great feel for the tracks we're going to.

"I trust my team. They want to learn and they want to work hard. All that is leading us to have great finishes."

Sounds like a forumula for success. For both Finley and Van Doorn, there is no limit to the greatness they may realize.
