Since Mother Nature seems to be wreaking havoc on Saturday night short track racing in Michigan so far this season, please excuse me while I talk a little NASCAR in this week's "Sheaffer's Shorts."
Didn't Mark Martin retire a few years ago? For a qualifying member of AARP, he sure is winning a lot of races - against guys who weren't even born when he broke into the sport! I remember an August race at Michigan International Speedway (seems like a decade ago) when the track presented Martin and Rusty Wallace with matching rocking chairs - as retirement gifts!
I'd like to say give it up already, but the "crazy old man" sure can drive a racecar. His experience and strategy certainly shown last Saturday night, when he drove comfortably for three quarters of the race, and got up on the wheel for the end.
My Dad told me after he turned 65 and left the work world, "had I known retirement was this much fun, I never would have worked!" I'm guessing Mr. Martin feels much the same way.
Digging back two weeks, a belated "congrats" to Rochester Hills' own Brad Kesolowski for his exciting win at Talladega. The enthusiasm and professionalism this kid shows is impressive. To keep his composure the way he did through the last lap carnage that led to his first Cup checkered flag showed his ability to the entire racing world. No doubt, there will be many more trophies added to his case.
On the local scene it was good to see a few different, but still familiar, faces at Spartan Speedway last Friday night. Phil Bozell trekking up from Kalamazoo and gracing the speedway was a pleasant surprise. It was also nice to see a Fedewa back in the saddle at the mid-Michigan bull ring. Tommy in a modified - it was like old times again.
My guess is that with the way the weather has been this spring, drivers are looking for any port before the storm! I'm thinking that must be why we're seeing more Saturday night regulars at the Friday night venues.
Let's hope Mother Nature had a good Mother's Day last week too, and she is in a better mood this weekend.
See you at the track!
